2 questions regarding bots

Post by ubermensche »

1) Can bots be suppressed?
2) Can bots see through smoke?

BONUS:
If the answer to question #1 was "no", than how can you take off the suppression effect?

I'm pretty sure however that they still have little chance of hitting you while doing so. The bots open fire from a good ways off and keep shooting as long as they have a shoot. This means that they use far more rounds than humans do. This makes them seem as better shoots then they are.

Example:
Human fires 1 perfectly lined up shot with a ACOG M16A4 and gets a kill
Bot fires full auto with his AKS-74U, while advancing, for as long as the human takes to notice the incoming hail of bullets, take aim and one shot kill him. The bot misses with all of his shots, but he does hit another near by human in the foot.

@ubermensche: Bots seem to be able to see pass anything that isn't a static object (on the max 120 setting I've heard they can even see pass walls!) Things such as bushes and tree leaves mean nothing to bots. It's for this reason that parts of Laskar Valley and all of Helmand Fields* (*SP map pack only) are the hardest parts Co-op.

Bots can see "everything". Quite literally everything at any given time forever. Because the bots are apart of the program, they know you are there all the time. It isn't like in more modern games where you can use stealth and such and they'll get aware of your presence by kicking a barrel or some water. It's an engine limitation, I'm sure. They know where everything is constantly. Example, you can give them priority on your position by shooting in their direction sometimes. If the bot is currently acting on an objective, it'll continue at it until it has something that takes priority (getting shot, defending a flag, etc). That's why you can sometimes catch them not paying attention to you. It isn't that they don't know you're there, it's that you're not top priority.

They're programmed not to shoot at you unless they can hit you in some way. That's why they won't fire at you if you're inside a building and they're outside the wall. If there is absolutely no LoS, they won't shoot. As for the smoke, since bots don't actually rely on "visible range" more than they do 1's and 0's, smoke and even distance in some cases has no bearing on what they can see.

I remember a modding project, related to FH2 I think, where someone made the bots unable to see through the smoke, it seemed good.

If it's the same one I saw then that was done by spawning a transparent spherical object from a smoke grenade. I did test this for a while but was unable to confirm it as fully working. Anyway, I needed to understand the BF2 editor in order to implement this idea myself. The original release of that mod was done by someone who is now difficult to contact so I need to recreate the technique myself in my own way.

There may be another way of doing this using Python scipting, but I'm not sure about that yet.
