What's so special about Muttrah?

Post by Gracler »

I wonder why every night Muttrah is almost always the "safe" choice at the end of the night and it is really starting to bother me why this overplayed map is being picked so often.

what is the reason that so many people like this map so much over other maps?
  • is it the CAS Cobra?
  • is it the clean streets making it impossible to hide in grass for example?
  • is it the sniper opportunities?
  • people not familiar with the names of other maps?
  • no one likes change of environment?
  • or other reasons?
Personally i change server or quit whenever Muttrah is on because it has been played so many times and all strategies have been spent on it. Nothing can surprise me on it.... maybe that's what people like... no surprises... just a aim and shoot environment, and not getting shot from an unknown direction.

What I'm hoping to see is that some servers return to a rotation of maps and stick with it, the speech used by many admins that "this map kills the server" cant really be used as an argument for Muttrah... Muttrah also kills servers if only a bit over 1/3 voted for it and won.

If a server starts to loose players its gonna die eventually anyway, unless if another populated server goes down.

And a last point.... Does admins ever check there neighbour servers for what maps they are currently running before doing a vote? ending up with 3-4 servers in the same timezone with the same map only gives the choise of play this map or play another game.... like ofcourse ARMA 2 PR :-D

Would it help to have a database with all maps including info about vehicle spawns and flag layouts to get someone more intrested in the other maps?

This is nothing new to gaming as a whole. Normally maps like this are good to start with, but end up over played. It just seems that once the "good maps" are known the list never changes. There is some truth that newer maps are bugger, but even when they are fixed they still get under played (of course to find the bugs in the first place people need toplay the map....).
Most of it just seems to be fear of the new. The same thing happened with no one using mumble. Of course mumble makes the gameplay better, but most players seemed to think even looking at it,much less using it, gave you AIDS.
The only fix is to some how make PR players less cowardly than they are now.

Muttrah offers a role for everyone. You have the city for the INF people, you have the hills for the 1337 snipers, you have the APCs for the armour people and ofc, the cobra for the CAS people.

Look at the de_dust2 in CS, Metro in bf3, karrrkand in vbf2... the reasons the same ;)

But what i think personally - muttrah popular because multiple reasons:
1. it have much move quality and more action than any other map just because it played, and played, and played again, and devs just had a tons of feedback, gameplay advices
2. linear gameplay - here you pushed to attack in aas order by city and terrain, idk any other map in pr where you can't get to the frontline only from 2 directions.
3. asset whores - cobra with no enemy in air, 30mm mtlb when there no enemy tanks\ifvs\powerful apcs, asymmetric balance(you think that enemy can't attack you with equal asset)
4. inf whores - we all know what inf can do with armor in city..., large amount of cover and buildings that allow you to use predicted and working tactics(almost everyone like to win in their style, but using another tactics, another plan - no way! :) ), concentrated team in one place do the 128p effect :D

Btw, why we just can't play on good map when everyone voting on it? It's how democracy works, and it's only admins choise to put this map in vote.

You should ask some Brazilian players that play on Brazilian servers, we run Muttrah 10 times in a day, the server administrators are trying to remove Muttrah from the list and votes without losing players, hard task.

It's the fact that it has something to offer for everyone. Great for infantry, great for armor (APCs in this case), and great for transport and CAS. There aren't many maps that offer that.

Chasing BTRs/AAVPs through the streets of Muttrah is awesome and great.

That sums it up perfectly.
I have to admit I share this feeling when I play the map. Whatever mood you're in, wanna enjoy a round as Infantry, driving around in armored vehicles...? muttrah offers pretty much all different kinds of gameplay.
That makes you at least not wanna leave that map cause you can always find something that you will enjoy for the next hours.

Additionally, once a map becomes slightly more common than others (and Muttrah was hyped a lot, remember!), people are more familiar with it, have more tactics developed for it, know their place - it's just a safer bet to play it at that point. Can't end up in a situation that'd require re-adjusting tactics, so people just stick with what they're good at.

Probably unrelated to what you meant, but i think Muttrah is special because the map looks like the actual place :)
good job on rhino's part.

Gameplay wise its as people have said, it has everything.

Eh. Muttrah is good as a map because it's a relatively narrow corridor. It's not that it's linear per se, it's that it's not so open that tactics become purely irrelevant. Most PR maps suffer from each team having 32 people to cover a frontline that is usually in the order of kilometers accross. They're meant to use these troops to attack, defend and influence all the ground in between, and what it actually means is that the map is desperately empty and you can get away with stupid things really easily.

Muttrah is one of the few maps where there is a vaguely reasonable AO for both teams. In reality, it's probably a BN to BDE sized objective to do properly, but it can be done with an understrength combined arms company like PR puts into it.

PR mappers have a love affair with big maps and many assets only work on very large maps. Unfortunately most core gameplay mechanics don't work on these large maps and it really hurts it. That's why everyone hates maps like Quinling (that and the lag spikes) despite it being a really good map. It's a fantastic map, it's just not a fantastic map for 32 v 32 gameplay.

Say what you want, but it is a beautifully done map, with outstanding quality. Plus, it's balanced, has the certain distribution of key areas and the flag positions are the most appropriate. And add that layout to coherence with its real life counterpart.

But you have to admit a lot of players can't seem to play any other map. I too like to take a break from Muttrah every now and then.

It's an amazing map, and I just love how it looks. My favourite role is Infantry - Playing as a Rifleman with the Anti-Air Kit building FOBs.

I wouldn't want to try APC since at any time, anyone can fire and get a hit in, so team-play is essential for the crew to survive - and plus I do not have the patience or the quick reflexes of keeping the vehicle alive, so it's a no.

First map I ever played in PR on the |TG| server. That's why I love it, at least.

The reason people love Muttrah & HOG ran it 24/7 for years can only be described as Versatility.

I also agree that muttrah is a good map, but I just played it too much, and don't see any diversity in the game play anymore.

narrow small maps.... well quai river has its bottlenecks unless if you wanna cross the river, Operation ghost train and jabal also has its narrow spots or asad khal.
Some of the big maps gives the armour and air assets a chance so they are nessasery to make those worthwhile but they make the infantry suffer so those maps are not comparable with muttrah. The WW2 minimods makes for some very small intense maps like road to saint lo i think it is.

I think that there are many options for variation but many wanna stay in the comfort zone and not move to far away from the glass jar and experiences new things, even if it is by risking a server crash.
