Is Linux still usable as a server host?

Post by Stulander »

I want to apply for a server license soon, and I'd preferably like to host it on Linux. I noticed there are hardly any Linux servers these days on the server list... is there any specific reason?

Thanks

It's usable and it's working flawlessly.
Some minor issues with punkbuster but there is nothing that you couldn't solve.
I've been running my servers on linux for years, think most people use windows cause administration is a bit easier.

Excellent, thank you. I just ordered my hosting, going to get it set up now so I can apply for a license!

I remember NEW used to use a Linux host and they never ever crashed when I played there... coincidence?! I think not!

Linux servers crash as well, but about the same amount than windows servers.

Will the server be for public play?

Yes Linux is a good choice. I ran a couple off of Linux a few years ago.
Nice tutorial. Thanks!

Tactical Gamer was an Excellent Server. Yeah that's right, I said that, go a head and BAN ME from your server now!

Another question: Is there any reason not to use the 64 bit BF2 server? Any issues?

Punkbuster setup can cause some trouble but nothing that wouldn't be solvable.
Also it's recommended to run a kernel above 3.0 as some of the 2.6 kernel suffer from very long times between map changes.

Yeah I know, I just didn't deem it necessary to create another thread for one question.

Do we have any idea what causes the long delay between maps for the older kernel versions?

There's a thread in the SA forums about it, I believe.
