Which OS is best for Bf2/PR ?

Post by Ason »

Hello, I got 2 computers, one stationary and one laptop:
Stationary:
OS: Win vista 32 bit
RAM: 1.5 GB
processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2CPU 4300 @ 1.8 GHz 1.8GHz
Graphic: Nvidia EN8400GS Silent
Laptop:
OS: Win 7 64 bit
RAM: 8 GB
Processor: AMD A6-3400M APU with Radeon(tm) HD graphics 1,4 GHZ x4(quad-core)
Graphic:
AMD Radeon 6600M and 6700 series
AMD Radeon HD 6520G

I don't know much about computers so I hope I wrote everything the right way :P
Now the problem is Project reality is working alot better on my stationary which seems to be alot worse than my laptop, The graphic is better on the laptop but the game is more stable on the stationary, alot less CTD etc. I got a feeling my laptop is much less stable because of either Win 7 or that it uses Quad core processor with only 1.4 GHz/core ? When I play PR on my laptop it CTD every 5 min - 40 min usually because MD5 tool Mismatch but not always because of that, 50 % MD5 mismatch and 50 % CTD without message.
Questions:
1. Can anybody tell me why my laptop sux when it should be so much better than my stationary? If you see anything which is causing this by the things i listed?

2. Which OS would be best to have on my laptop to play BF2-PR?

3. How can I know which OS will work on my laptop? I heard something about you need to have the right motherboard to the right OS, not every computer can have lets say windows XP ?

TO answer your second question, "2. Which OS would be best to have on my laptop to play BF2-PR?"
The answer is "Win 7 64 bit"
So don't worry about that.

To answer your first question, you should consider possibilities to overclock your APU, using a program like k10stat or TurionPowerControl.

You also should optimize your laptop OS and shut down background processes.
As for increasing your fps, we have some common solutions,
delete the shaders cache in your c:\Users\[USERNAME]\Documents\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\cache folder
then
1. defrag your hard drive. the PR and addons installers tend to get fragmented, which slows down read/writes and slows down fps.
2A. Download and install IOBit Gamebooster3. Speed Up Slow Computer, Keep PC and Internet Secure, Freeware Download - IObit
MajorGeeks.com has a decent video tutorial on using this program:
Using IOBit Game Booster 3 by Majorgeeks.com - YouTube

2B. Read through these guides:

Windows 8, 7 , Vista, and XP Tweakguides from Tweakguides.com TweakGuides.com - The TweakGuides Tweaking Companion

3. Download Bitsum ProcessLasso Free. Make sure you download the correct version, Free 32 bit or Free 64 bit, Process Lasso - Automate and optimize priorities, CPU affinities, power profiles, and much more!
-- Start PR, alt tab to desktop, open ProcessLAsso window, right click on PR.exe, TR.exe, BF2.exe, PRMumble.exe and pnkbstra.exe and pnkbstrB.exe and give them default priority status of High, set the Tr PR and BF2 to gaming mode, and give them high or higher access to RAM.

4. Determine which OS you have, and if it is 32 bit or 64 bit. Once you are 100% certain you know , follow this guide for your OS:
https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f27-pr ... b-ram.html

5. Check your Page File, if set to a sliding value, I suggest
deleting pagefile.
rebooting.
resetting pagefile manually to a single minimum/maximum.
Here is the raw information to determine your correct pagefile: How to determine the appropriate page file size for 64-bit versions of Windows Server 2008 and or Windows 2008 R2
And here is a video tutorial to figure out your correct pagefile size:

then optionally:
manually setting it to a single minimum/maximum, and getting a defrag progam that will move the pagefile to the beginning of your hard drive. A free option:FAQ Special files - How do I defragment "C:\pagefile.sys" (the swapfile)?

THE MOST IMPORtANT OPTION YOU HAVE IS TO USE k10stat or TurionPowerControl to overclock your APU. BE VERY CAREFUL, READ BEFORE YOU DO, SEARCH FOR YOUTUBE VIDEOS THAT EXPLAIN THE ENTIRE PROCESS. The big problem is the heat generated, but your A6-3400M is a very good overclocker, it depends on the cooling fans and cooling APU heatsink used in your particular laptop model. You can hit 2.3Ghz almost all the time, and some people can get to 2.4Ghz.

Disclaimer and Dangers: Normally laptops are not meant to be overclocked whatsoever. Doing so may also void your warranty on your laptop. Therefore the following information is provided at your OWN risk.

SO.
Step 1. fixes any hard drive issues.
Step 2. shut downs unneeded background processes freeing up RAM and system resources.
Step 3. Gives the BF2 and PR and PRmumble and punkbuster programs High priority for RAM and system resources.
Step 4. Gives the BF2 and PR.exe programs the ability to use individually over 2GB of RAM when needed, and reduces the amount of RAM being reserved (wasted) by the OS.
Step 5. Create fixed size Pagefile and defragmenting it.
