Re: Ambient Occlusion for PR: Battlefield 2
It's been done a bunch of times already. You can contact DICE all you want, but they only take "orders" from EA. And you can contact EA about it, but they're not going to bother with BF2 at all. Plus we're just a tiny group of players compared to the masses that play the newer games.sweedensniiperr wrote:why not do it anyway?

Re: Ambient Occlusion for PR: Battlefield 2
Anyone know what about the Battlefield 2 engine prevents us from making updates to it that only DICE can?

They don't give anybody source code, which is required to modify engine.

So, do we send them an email or something?
Dear DICE,
Please give us your source code for the Refractor 2 Engine. We want it and you should give it to us. K, thanks.

I tried it. It worked pretty well. You can see a slight difference, everything seems smooth. I like it a lot.
I had no problem of framerate (tested on ramiel) even if my Graphic Card blew a little more than usual.
My config :
Intel Core I7-2600 k CPU 3,40GHZ
8 go ram
Gainward Ge force GTX 570. 1280 mb
Windows Seven 64bits

We could pay some money to them. I dont know how mutch, but we could ask if the give us the source code for some bugs.[R-CON]Moszeusz6Pl wrote:They don't give anybody source code, which is required to modify engine.
Or they sit 1 developer on it to fix some sh.i.t. Lets do it on Kickstarter.
Wasssup EA,
please put a developer on your old crapy Bf2 engine, to fix the problems you produced.
And put in features we paid for on the release.
We also have some money for you, ahh i think i have now your attention.
Yours Sincerely
CCC

I don't think that PR community can gather enough money to convince EA.

This is where we have some famous PR player who reveals himself and says he'll pay it off.

Re: Ambient Occlusion for PR: Battlefield 2
How about, you open a new thread for that cause?
I tested Ambient Occlusion with different settings yesterday (Performance, Quality, High Quality) and i noticed a small issue with grass. AO gonna cause grass to have a pretty nice shadow effect at the base of the grass texture, but on low settings like Performance (more noticeable) and even on Quality (a bit less noticeable) the grass will have a decent amount of "flickering" when you move around.
The flickering becomes less with higher AO setting (high quality), but that hits the fps pretty hard.

Re: Ambient Occlusion for PR: Battlefield 2
Tried it out yesterday, works for me.
As you said Predator, there is some flickering with it, although I mostly noticed it on geometry like stairs rather than grass (tried Quality and High Quality settings). I think it also causes a slight flickering on the blur shader while zoomed in with scoped weapons, but not exactly sure about that. Lastly it sometimes adds AO around small parts of your weapon where there shouldn't be any. Apart from that it worked fine though and adds some subtle detail.

So no way to do this with an AMD card in catalyst control center?

Re: Ambient Occlusion for PR: Battlefield 2
The problem is, if the Refractor 2 is owned by EA (even though DICE made it), they will never affect even 1 dev to work on BF2 or give PR Devs the source code. Greedy ********. And it's not with $1000 that we will make them flinch, considering they make $76 000 000 of net income every year
On the other hand, DICE is a studio, not an editor. And generally, studios are more generous and player-minded than editors who just think about money (EA and Activision, for exemple
). So if Refractor 2 is still owned by DICE, than we might have a chance.

For the ambient occlusion, it seems pretty good on the screenshots
We can now tell where the stairs are lol can't try it myself, though... I can't even run PR above 8 FPS on all minimum

Wouldn't ENB be a better solution that everyone can possibly use?
