Shikotan is one of the bigger islands of the Kuril Islands, which are part of the Russian Federation. It is one of the four southernmost islands which Japan maintains a claim for.

If we talk about Kuril Islands dispute we should take 4 south islands:
Iturup (Area - 3139 km2)
Kunashir (Area - 1490 km2)
Shikotan (Area - 225 km2) not very big
Habomai Islands (Area about 100km2)
