Is 3DS Max the only 3D editing program we can use or are there others?

I'm looking to get into modeling and try helping out with PR but would rather not buy 3DS Max and I'm not a student anymore so the Autodesk thing is out. What are my options?

You can go with Blender ! It's free, and you can export your .blend models to .whateveryouwant lol it's a really neat program and I'm doing quite good stuff with it Some might says that it lacks some features but, if you're not into highly professional things, it's doing its job fine !

Blender was the first program I tried using but the tutorial I had was for an older version so I couldn't get stuff to work (buttons not where they were supposed to be). That was like 2 years ago though so I'll give it another shot.

Gmax - Free Download

Gmax is the free version of 3ds max with some features cut out. Been 5-6 years since I saw or touched the thing though.
