Is swimming realistic?
How possible is it for men loaded up in combat gear to be able to swim across canals or rivers? (like on the Chinese AAS maps, or even the short rivers like on Korengal)
Wouldn't it be very likely for the men to drown with all of that gear?
And isn't it bad to get ammo really wet?

Re: Is swimming realistic?
It is more realistic than being entirely unable to survive falling into water. Even if it'd be a lot more difficult to swim in real life, I prefer being able to swim with a HAT to being killed the instant I touch water.

You should be able to fire when swimming surely ? Not accurate but you get what I mean

You're trained to at least tread water. And yes getting ammo wet is bad. Its a gameplay consideration , getting stuck treading water and having to suicide would be boring

Cause we throw bombs on it, throw bombs on it. Just smash something, yeah mosh for me.

Re: Is swimming realistic?
The heavy weight of your combat load does make swimming difficult, but not impossible for short distances or treading water for a short period of time. Units that are in water more often, such as the USMC, actually have a flotation ring that is worn sort of like the old ALICE suspenders. It's just bouyant enough to keep them and their gear afloat. If I remember correctly, the USMC also trains their Marines in water operations as part of their Basic Training.pr0Life wrote:How possible is it for men loaded up in combat gear to be able to swim across canals or rivers? It's unrealistic to be swimming for 20 minutes straight, or across a long stretch of water. But I'm not sure if it's possible to start gradually reducing health after a certain period of time in the water with this game, or if it's even worth the effort.
As for ammo getting wet, in situations like that it's not a problem. You can submerge modern ammunition in 5m of water for a bit and not lose seal integrity. It's not like you're storing the ammo under water, or diving 50m with it. But it's best to dry it off when you get the chance to reduce risk of stoppages (fail to feed, not fail to fire).
Some of the cheaper ammunition made in third-world countries or in ghetto factories is more often found to be lacking the proper water seals on the neck and primer, but even then most of it will withstand a few minutes submersion.
You do NOT want to fire your weapon with water inside the barrel. If your weapon is equipped with an air-tight muzzle cap and it was not submerged more than 3-5m, then firing ONE SHOT might be safe. But water inside the barrel and gas system while firing could change your name to "Stubby". Or "Dead Meat".ElshanF wrote:You should be able to fire when swimming surely ? It's just better for gameplay to allow water access, at least on a limited level (when possible). In real life, even if your gear is too much of a burden and you start to sink, you can just ditch your vest or what ever and surface. People don't just drown the second their head goes under the waves. Unless the game is specifically coded to limit duration in the water, it's better to allow water access than to insta-kill. And blocking people from entering the water with invisible barriers would make it feel even more unrealistic and buggy.

Getting ammo wet isn't the bad part. As modern bullets are self contained the odds of water effecting the primer or powder is low. The bigger problem would be water in the gun, which if not drained could cause misfires or worse.Warpig- wrote:You're trained to at least tread water. And yes getting ammo wet is bad. Being able to swim isn't realistic especially over long distances but it is needed for gameplay.
Due to engine limitations it is easy to get stuck in water and need to swim to other areas.

It should be both possible and easy to do. Civies have the coding already to keep them from hiding in water IIRC.[R-DEV]Ninja2dan wrote:But I'm not sure if it's possible to start gradually reducing health after a certain period of time in the water with this game, or if it's even worth the effort.

it's so gamey, illogical, and obnoxious though. They start bleeding as soon as they enter the water. It's just confusing and ugly to see if you dont know why its happening.

There's only a 5 second water damage delay on them though, that can be adjusted.

Re: Is swimming realistic?
what makes swimming so difficult with a combat gear is not the swimming itself.. its the float that makes you drift away... in SAS 2/3 of the accidents that happen in training are because of crossing rivers. i dont know if BF2's engine allows the devs to make floating rivers but it would be nice to see in 1.0

Re: Is swimming realistic?
Could it not be implemented that time in water affects stamina, just being in the swimming state causes stamina loss?
It would make sense that when you're more tired you wouldn't be able to swim as long, after swimming for a while you wouldn't be able to sprint very far.
Maybe have it so that when stamina runs out you start losing a small amount of health. (Technically it would even work on land because the regeneration of samina as standard would stop you losing too much health, and over-exhaustion certainly ain't fun)
As it is though and reading through everything it makes more sense to be able to swim, I can't think of too many examples where people in game have been in the water for extended periods of time.

Re: Is swimming realistic?
unless your special forces and use some james bond style of attack during the cover of darkness i don't think you want to engage while your still swimming since there is no cover in the water. Army soldiers would cross water with all there gear including there weapons in a water-sealed bag that also works as a floating device, which means that when they touch land it would take them a considerable amount of time before they are geared up and ready to continue. A soldiers worst enemy is getting wet so that's why they would avoid deep water crossings as much as possible.ElshanF wrote:You should be able to fire when swimming surely ? Swimming soldiers rely on others to cover them..... and apart from the quickness of getting ready when you reach land i think it is quite realistic as it is now. I think it is difficult to implement a mechanism that makes it possible to distinguish if a player has just been in water... or if he is exiting a vehicle. maybe i'm wrong.
Sprint should be drained 100% when in water though.......and start to re-gen as soon as you reach dry-land
