PR Mumble Overlay issue

Post by ThatPurpleFox »

As long as I have the PR Mumble Overlay enabled, I CANNOT start PR: BF2. If I disable it, I can run the game. I added the line to the shortcut, the -nod one, tried disabling the steam overlay, added a whitelist exception for all .exe's in the Steam main folder and all of the .exe's in the BF2 folders, and still nothing. I stopped playing PR for awhile, and during that period upgraded my system, and have NEVER had this happen before. I'd like to be able to play with the Overlay since it helps, but apparently it just isn't going to work.

Also, all programs are run as admin, and I've tried everything listed in the sticky threads hoping something would work.

And before you ask, here are my specs (HIGHLY doubt the problem is related to system specs):
  • Intel Core i5-2500k
  • ASROCK Z68 PRO3 GEN3
  • EVGA nVidia GeForce GTX 560ti
  • Seagate Barracuda 1 TB SATA 3Gb/s
  • Western Digital Caviar SE 320 GB IDE (w/IDE-SATA Adapter)
  • G.Skill Ripjaws X 8GB DDR3 1333Mhz (PC10666) RAM

Honestly, it will be quicker to fully uninstall PRMumble 1.0.0.4 Beta , reboot, and reinstall, than to try to troubleshoot this any further.
H. UNinstalling and Reinstalling
Uninstall PRmumble, and delete its configs. Easiest way is to use Win+R and type "%appdata%" and press enter.

It will open "C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\"

Now lookup for folder named Mumble there and delete it. Reboot and Reinstall the newest PRMumble
Exactly what did you upgrade? If you upgraded your GPU, and/or monitor, and/or changed resolution, you might have one of a few problems:
Just in general,
make sure you deleted all prior GPU drivers, (especially true if you swapped from an AT/AMD GPU to a NVidia card)
In the PRMumble overlay options, make sure the overlay is actually onscreen, and not off the edge

Another way to test this, which I just recently figured out, is turn on PRMumble and connect to a public server in the Server->Connect menu, and then start any other DX9 game, and see if the overlay works.
That will make a binary choice, if PRmumble works, than it's a PR.exe problem, if PRMumble crashes, it's PRmumble problem. BUT, I suggest a fresh reinstall first,... all of the testing takes much longer than a reinstall.

It is a fresh install. Forgot to mention that the upgrade was a total system upgrade, including a brand new Windows 7 installation. I installed BF2 and PR for the first time today since the upgrade back in December of 2012.

But I will try the reinstall, sometimes that fixes issues with some programs.

Clean install didn't work, it's still crashing. It also crashes EVERY game I try to run, either on Steam, Origin, or Uplay. It even crashed Skype!

Turn off Steam overlay for BF2 and PR.

What other programs with overlays are you running?

Do you have Raptr running in the background? That is one of a few programs known to crash Mumble.

Older versions of MSI Afterburner can also cause issues.

If you have other overlay programs running, shut them down completely and then try again.

Yeah I had this issue with my old laptop using the HD3000... The overlay would crash PR just after it started up. Sooo frustrating, and I tried every fix under the sun, but nothing ever worked. Actually, I never tried a clean OS install on the laptop... that might've been the only real fix.

Now that I have my desktop put together, no dramas at all. Sorry to hear you're stuck with the same issue :(

Disabling steam overlay does nothing, don't have either Raptr or MSI Afterburner, and no other program running on my computer has an active overlay. I disabled the Origin, Steam, and Uplay overlay.

Also, it is NOT Mumble that crashes, it's PR itself. Nothing is working to get the overlay up and I just can't play PR without the overlay. It's so damn confusing trying to figure out who's talking and sometimes I confuse local for squad chat

I would just like to say that i have the same exact problem.

got a new computer this summer and was never able to run mumble before PR.

I had to first run PR and then once ingame i could turn on mumble (but this way the overlay didnt work).

after reading this thread i realized that i could run mumble before PR if i disable the overlay. So not much

changed.

As much as i want to use the overlay i could live without it, but i am concerned if PR 1.0 will work for me.

(idk how the launcher works "behind the scenes" and if it will also cause this)
