With the auto-updater, more possibilities

Post by Bluedrake42 »

So now that we have an auto-updater, I was thinking that we could take advantage of this to add more depth and content to PR, specifically with maps.

After the release of PR 1.0, we could focus on releasing new maps with a faster release cycle than having to only release them with full blown gameplay updates. There could also be a "community beta" option for the updater where community beta maps could be downloaded, played and tested before they're fully ready.

I think one of the only weakpoints of PR is the lack of maps, which is hilarious since we have so many, but when you really think about it, the first thing that gets old after the release of a new patch is the map-list. Keeping a fresh map-list every few months or so I think could really add a lot to the community and the game (especially if we have a community maps beta option)

I know there are TONS of PR maps out there, old maps, unreleased maps, beta maps, vanilla maps, etc. Instead of releasing all of them, we could use the autoupdater to shuffle around what maps are on the server map-list and what maps aren't. I really think this could help keep things fresh.

Let me know what you think.
I just woke up 10 minutes ago.

I for one think it's an excellent idea.

Hm, yeah. Maybe like a tab with community maps and the user can "checkbox" which map he wants to be downloaded.

This is one of the big reasons behind us adopting an updater naturally. Although just because we have one doesn't mean we are going to (even if we where able to) release every possible map we can find (ie, old maps that have been retired, normally for very good reason, vBF2 maps etc) since for one, anyone downloading the mod from scratch would then have a few more gbs of maps to download, most they may never even play and that's if they are up for downloading all this extra content which very well may put them off from downloading the mod in the first (even for old vets coming back) and many maps simply don't work very well for PR's gameplay.

But yes, any new content we are going to make we plan on releasing in dribs and drabs where possible although some things will still need to be released in bigish chunks.

As for the idea of custom content you can choose to download as per extra maps or even minimods, we are also considering that idea too but we want to get a solid updater for the main build done first.
