Yoyo Ping

Post by sapper1893 »

Hi all, I'm having a problem with my ping. It's up and down like a yoyo. If I click on the team screen where you can see your ping reading I can watch it going up and down between 77-800. I have just signed up to BT internet (UK) and it was running fine and this problem has only started in the past few days. I'm no computer guru so wouldn't have a clue where I am supposed to look or what to do. Can anyone help.

OK further to start of thread, I've just sat and watched my ping and it is changing every 2-3 seconds. I goes up and then comes down again :x :x :x :x

Have you tried resetting your router? Checked cables etc.

Also go to Pingtest.net - The Global Broadband Quality Test, run this a few times and see what the results are.

I suspect the problem is with BT, it normally is even though they won't admit it. Had any heavy rain recently? Is you phone line into the house underground or from an overhead pole?

Just done that ping test and it says B+ very good. Any more ideas?
Cables are good, reset router. I even connected the cable but no change.This is starting to pi** me off. I started BT internet last week and it was running fine, in fact better than my old provider. Problem has only started in the past few days.

Just done the BT check and I am getting 17.6mb at home from exchange at 20.1mb so that seems to be ok.

You actually have a jitter problem not a ping problem,
I can't believe I know this much about a British ISP,

You need to test for jitter
Pingtest.net - The Global Broadband Quality Test
8x8, Inc. VoIP Test and Broadband Speed Test

specific to BT:
http://test.speedtester.bt.com
directions to use:
::. Kitz - BTw Performance Speedtest .::

Done that, I've got a jitter of 8ms whatever that is. How so I solve Jitter problem? Got Java working as well and I have packet loss of 4. Same again no idea what that means.

Open up command prompt, type the following in:

ping 5.9.5.3 -n 50

Right click once done, hit "Mark", higlight the bottom bit like shown below, and paste it

Code: Select all

 tags

[code]Ping statistics for 5.9.5.3:
    Packets: Sent = 50, Received = 49, Lost = 1 (2% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 264ms, Maximum = 293ms, Average = 273ms

Put the 5.9.5.3.n 50 into command prompt. It runs down a list of numbers whcih looks like my ping and then disappears where am I supposed to hit the "mark" and where do I find the code tags, and where do I post it?

Well it looks like its working again. I did an update check and it would seem I had a lot of hardware/software needed updating. Don't know if this solved the problem but it's working again. I'm a happy sapper again.
