bf2.exe has stopped working on start up
I have looked at all relevant threads and searched google with no Avail.
Simply upon start up the game will load to the "EA games challenge everything" or to the dice screen and CTD to a bf2.exe has stopped working.
Or it will just flash a black screen then close and say the bf2.exe has stopped working.
I would like to start playing PR again as I havent been able to for around a year and a half.

Re: bf2.exe has stopped working on start up
Start in windowed mode:
Hopefully this will then allow the suppressed error message to be displayed.add this to your shortcut in the target line by right clicking your shortcut and selecting properties "+fullscreen 0 +szx 800 +szy 600" (minus "")
the 800x600 can be whatever you want

Re: bf2.exe has stopped working on start up
I tried it and the game still unfortunatly crashes it tells me that
"A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available"
When and how will they notify me?

Re: bf2.exe has stopped working on start up
Edit your BF2 shortcut and put this in it
Dont just copy paste this, but adjust to your install location. Make sure you dont omit quotation marks or it wont work.
If you start in windowed mode and it CTDs, a Message will pop up telling you the problem. Take a screenshot or write this down and post it to this thread.
Code: Select all
"C:\Program Files\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +restart +menu 1 +fullscreen 0 +szx 1280 +szy 720If you start in windowed mode and it CTDs, a Message will pop up telling you the problem. Take a screenshot or write this down and post it to this thread.

Re: bf2.exe has stopped working on start up
That isn't a very informative error message.
There is a lot of different problems that can kick out that message.
My first guess, it's your audio card,
The first thing to try is to disable your Creative SB X-Fi in device manager, plug your headphones/speakers into mobo audio out 3.5mm jack, reboot, then do the following:
IF you know your username and password, or can recover those from gamespy,
I'd suggest renaming \Documents\Battlefield 2\ to \Documents\Battlefield 2 Backup\
then try starting vanilla BF2 again.
Has BF2 been installed since you stopped playing, or did you just reinstall?
Please give us some more info, related to what version of BF2 you have, when you installed it, what OS,
If you can, uninstalling, running a registry cleaner to remove any extra bits of BF2 entries in registry, rebooting, then reinstalling ... will probably be faster and the least painful option to get you up and running.

I had tried about a year ago and it didnt work then and I have had 2 reformats since.
So I have just reinstalled.
I have tried with both Steam version and a Disk (Complete collection) version. The last time it ran well was on WinXP and I have had problems with BF2/PR on Win7 since Upgrading to Win7.

Re: bf2.exe has stopped working on start up
It's possible, (as in it happened to me personally, that when I tried to install BF2 on both Steam and EA Origin on the same PC, both installations got screwed up due to a bad registry entry. But I really don't know what to tell you, you can and uninstall Disk version, use Steam Backup to backup the Steam version, uninstall steam version, clean out the registry, reboot, and restore the steam version?
Just going to post this so you can review the installation process. Keep in mind Steam automatically updates to BF2 version 1.5

'[R-COM wrote:LITOralis.nMd']I'll post this and I put in bold the most important part. Let your friend read through this and check to see if he installed in the correct order.
[/b][R-COM]LITOralis.nMd wrote:Was BF2 installed and working before you installed PR? Was BF2 patched to 1.5 ?
Can you log in to vanilla BF2?
If BF2 was already working, we'll suggest one course of action. (Could be firewall/antivirus/router/installation error/etc)
IF BF2 was just installed NOW so you can play PR, all the parts have to be installed in proper order.
Please read below and make sure you installed BF2 and PR in this order:
Here is the installation guide with download links:
PR:BF2 Support - Project Reality Forums
https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f27-pr ... guide.html
Here is the installation guide in tl;dr format:
Install BF2.
Run BF2.
Note the version number on the bottom left corner of the log-in screen. Write it down.
log in or create a user account.
join online game.
adjust your audio and video settings now for convenience.
exit BF2.
Reboot.
(Optionally if you bought it) install Special Forces Addon.
Run BF2.
log in.
join online game.
exit BF2.
Reboot.
install 1.41 FULL PATCH.
Run BF2.
log in.
join online game.
exit BF2.
Reboot.
install 1.5 PATCH.
Run BF2.
log in.
join online game.
exit BF2.
Reboot.
Download and install 0.973 full installer.
Start the PR shortcut on desktop.
log in.
exit PR.
Download and install the PR 0.973 to 0.981 Patch
(If it CTDs, Edit the PR shortcut as described below.)
Start the PR shortcut on desktop.
log in.
join online game.
If you crash at the splash screen, or the screen goes black and then crashes to desktop, try to start PR in windowed mode by following the directions below:
Edit your PR shortcut and ( what AfterDune said ) put this in it
If you start in windowed mode and it CTDs, a Message will pop up telling you the problem. Take a screenshot or write this down and post it to this thread.Code: Select all
Code: "D:\Program Files\Battlefield 2\mods\pr\pr.exe" +restart +menu 1 +fullscreen 0 +szx 1280 +szy 720 Dont just copy paste this, but adjust to your install location. Make sure you dont omit quotation marks or it wont work.
You can then download the PR:Vietnam, PR:Normandy, PR:Falklands and Anders Soundmod at your discretion.

Re: bf2.exe has stopped working on start up
how do you clean out the bf2 registry?
Edit: NVM I have advanced system care and cleaned my registry and installed the steam version, ran the game no crash, rebooted my PC and ran the game 3 times in a row iwth now crash. hopefully this issue is fixed however I wont hold my breath as it will probably crash when I play and stop working with the same issue

Re: bf2.exe has stopped working on start up
You have to BUY BF2, which works for Win XP, Win 7 and Win 8.1 aswell WITHOUT compatibility mode. No discussion on these forums for a so-called "cracked" game.
You can buy BF2 on Origin for 10 €/$ afaik, or look on Steam.
