Hey guys, I've recently gotten into recording my gaming footage and posting it on YouTube. Currently I use Fraps (and I'm happy with it; I get minimal fps loss and it comes out in great quality) and Windows Live Movie Maker to edit the footage.
Recently, I realized that when Movie Maker compresses the file, it also lowers the resolution (from 1920x1080 to 1440x1080). So now I'm looking for a better software program to edit my footage that won't lower the resolution and saves the file as something other than .WMV.
Any suggestions? I'm not up to spending $600 for something like Sony Vegas Pro and live on a limited budget, so something reasonable would be nice.

Well, for compression, the obvious choice is Handbrake. I use it reguarly for my PR and planetside2 uploads.
On the editing side, it's another story. There really isn't an in-between option besides Adobe Premiere Elements,
On the free side, you have Avidemux
EDIT: You have to use Use avidemux 2.5.6 or earlier version, the 2.6.X releases no longer are compatible with FRAPS.

Avidemux is a free video editor designed for simple cutting, filtering and encoding tasks. It supports many file types, including AVI, DVD compatible MPEG files, MP4 and ASF, using a variety of codecs. Tasks can be automated using projects, job queue and powerful scripting.
You also need to download additional free video and audio codecs I think, I haven't used it in a few years.
The learning curve on Avidemux is a bit of a hassle, but you can add text, image overlays, and do some simple transitions with it.

I found the Windows Vista version of Windows Movie Maker (6.0) ripped and put into an .msi installer.

It has a preset for 720p and 1080p by default and doesn't have as many glitches as the 2.6 version of Windows Movie Maker.
After it installs you'll have to find the launcher manually because the programmer didn't add a feature to add a shortcut to the desktop.
I've tested it with Windows 7 and Windows 8 but not Windows XP.

Anyways, that said, have you tried MSI Afterburner? It's a free video gaming capture and overclocking software all-in-one, it's lite and it's the best video capture. It can capture your mic audio or you can choose not to. Very customizable. Highly recommended.
