RAM prices
I don't understand how one stick or DDR2 800 4GB is well over double the price of a 2GB stick.
I'm doing a cheap machine for PR and I'd like 8GB of DDR2 800, but that's going to cost the same as a decent graphics card.
I guess I'll just have to stay with 4, as I'm not convinced its worth $150 more for that extra 4GB.

Re: RAM prices
DDR2 RAM has been mostly out of production for 3 years.
One of the reasons I suggested buying a refurb LGA775 PC and making a frankenstein was so you could scavenge the DDR2 RAM.
If staying with 4GB now, consider creating a slimmed down Win7 installation .iso , so you don't have windows services running unneeded in the background 24/7.
Then also use GameBooster to shutdown processes before gaming.

Buying more current ram will give you best cost effectiveness by a lot more than you think.Doc.Pock wrote:1) why ddr2
2) kingston has a decent ddr3 8gb set out for like 50?

Re: RAM prices
Good points but my cheapo mobo can only take DDR2, litoralis where I live there is nothing even the tap water isn't drinkable and cuts out quite often. The electricity cuts off and then surges so much stuff dies. Recently described by the local computer shop guy (only one for 300kms) as being stuck in pre history.
I was going to win7 64 this machine, but I'll stick with Vista 32 and 4 RAM, later if PR Arma 3 looks worthwhile worthwhile I'll go the full slog with a 1155.
Another annoying problem I've met is that my box is micro atx which severely limits GPU choice but I can't have a full size as it won't fit in a suitcase.

I know but I've got vista32 already, I don't want to pay twice for win7 as I'll be changing the mobo in a while.

Because it is a real pain in the *** when you change Mobo as it thinks it's a new computer, well that's what I've read anyway.

nothing's more pain than vista
on a serious note, you will gain performance with W7, and if that means abit more fiddling when you change teh mobo, id take it.

Totally off topic, but worth it.
looking at your location... Shut off the PC and go outside enjoy that paradise you live in!
Take some pics of what it looks like too, so I can daydream.

Nothing to dream about here dude, fine for a holiday but I'm here for years.
Lots of racism against whites, very little freedom, very very expensive as next to nothing is made here.
When I say pain in the *** what I mean is that when I change the mobo I'll have to pay for another activation key.

You live nearly off the grid, can you not get a "local" copy from the say... Indonesia, Singapore, etc.
I don't think you must bring your first world sensibilities to small town New Caledonia.
If a mobo fries, you are in your rights in the EULA to call MS and get a new license key if you are jsut replacing fried hardware in kind and the mobo is out of manufacturer warranty/RMA fimeframe.
I already showed you how to call Microsoft and ask for a new key based on your old mobo blowing up, the Microsoft techs are generally pretty loose with giving out keys., Worse comes to worse, fake a Frenchie/Melanesian pidgin accent, I'm sure the Bangladeshi call center agent will be just as happy to get you off the line as you'll be to get your key.
EDIT: Doc.Pock, stop harassing Ploddit, his lifestyle is well different than your pretty comfy life in Europe.

Re: RAM prices
I don't think you will have trouble reinstalling after a MOBO replacement. Quite a few places online say that a reinstall is not necessary when replacing a MOBO.
When I upgraded my PC recently I went to install WIN7 with my upgrade disc, it kicked me out of the install because it did not detect a prior win installation. I cancelled the installl and restarted it the next day with the plan of calling MS to get a new key, but the install went right through and has been working fine. I suppose it saw my old failed install as a valid prior installation.

Re: RAM prices
Well when the mobo shows up I'll try with Vista thats on the HD.
It's an interesting point as if the EULA let's you change a mobo, isn't that nearly a whole computer, or if when the CPU and mobo are changed then it stops?
I ask as I've got a much faster CPU to put in, maybe I'll try with the original CPU first then try the faster one.
Thanks for the offer noddy, but there's actually quite a good French computer shop LDLC that are happy to ship and take of the 20 per cent VAT so after the 33 per cent import taxes it's not too much more.
If I buy through OZ I'd have to pay import duties twice assuming OZ works like NC.
New parts are ok from abroad but local stuff is horrible, a shifty shuttle basic here is 50000=$500 chez Amazon com it's $150.
Lol with the accents I'll do French if I need too.

Re: RAM prices
I have had to change mobo recently (in a previous post) and honestly had to do nothing... It did come up with a message saying "you're using a non-validated version of win 7, click here to fix". Clicked it, and so long as you're connected to the internet, it will sort itself out in secondsPLODDITHANLEY wrote:Because it is a real pain in the *** when you change Mobo as it thinks it's a new computer, well that's what I've read anyway.
Had everything installed on the HDD's before the mobo melted, and then bought a new mobo & ram, plonked everything back in, and set up RAID again (HDD's were in raid 0), and worked exactly the same as before, just microsoft office, windows 7 and autodesk asked to re-activate themselves.
