BF2 crash on menu

Post by Stryker86 »

Hi all just got the steam edition of BF2 (lost my original disk many years ago.)

Anyway having issues just getting it to run in prep for PR1.0

Firstly i was having resolution issues and the game crashing during the opening videos. Now after going through various fixes to get past these issues, running as admin, editing video.con files, turning off steam overlay, running in window, skipping the intro videos etc.

Anyway ive now got it to a point where it makes it to the very first menu screen (asking me if i want to play single or multiplayer)

It then crashes about 5 seconds after that, i was quick last time and got to the account creation screen! haha...

Soooo... any ideas?

Specs are
Windows 7
ATI 7790
3rd gen i7 (forgot the exact model sorry)
12gig of ram

any help would be appreciated im really looking forward to this, as a long time ARMA player im looking forward to ditching the clunkiness for a while

Welcome to PR Stryker,

You've already done most of this so I'll write it in short format:

Edit your BF2 shortcut and put this in it

Code: Select all

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +restart +menu 1 +fullscreen 0 +szx 1280 +szy 720
Don't just copy paste this, but adjust to your install location. Make sure you don't omit quotation marks or it wont work.
If you start in windowed mode and it CTDs, a Message will pop up telling you the problem. Take a screenshot or write this down and post it to this thread.

Also, certain overlay programs can cause this situation, MSI Afterburner, old versions of FRAPs, Asus Suite II, and several other DX9 overlays , so make sure to turn them all off before you start BF2.

Hi mate thanks for the reply.

Actually saw this particular shortcut command line earlier and tried that to no avail, same problem. Killed off msi afterburner as well and I don't "think" I have anything else like that going. Very bizarre.

Go to MyDocuments\Battlefield 2\Profiles and just delete that entire directory.

Next step would be to verify the game files in Steam.

I am not sure how a fresh install of BF2 on Steam could be so much work to get running. Then delete the directory above again. And try to run in windowed mode as mentioned above.

What was the cause of the resolution problems? Multi-monitor setup or something?

Yeah man done both of those already too, originally it was multi monitor, that and my main monitor runs at 2450 x 15something something.

Tried on my secondary one as well and on just the primary with the other disabled.

Well sucsess. re set things up like you suggested (deleted the profile folders again) re enabled the movies and then took your shortcut params.

Restarted PC

Practically killed every single background process that wasnt vital to running the PC

and now its working thanks a lot mate!
