Virus detected in PR Updater
Hello,
I just loaded PR to play it, then the updater ran, I updated and after the update I was hit with AVG stating a virus alert in PRUpdater.exe. I have included several screenshots.
What is with this????

I have AVG, and mine has no problem with it, maybe your one is being overprotective?

I hope so, hopefully nobody has hacked the server and replaced the update file with an infected version. Maybe the devs could run a virus scan on the file from their end?Kaix12 wrote:I have AVG, and mine has no problem with it, maybe your one is being overprotective?

Re: Virus detected in PR Updater
Pretty sure PRLauncher acts as a type of injector, a dev stated in another thread that it's necessary to do certain things in game.
As such my assumption is that it works somewhat similarly to how ESP game hacks work. These types of things regularly get flagged by the overzealous virus tools. I understand it's PRUpdater in this case, but the two are pretty linked.
As this is a behavioural detection, I'm going to go with the scanner being overzealous and false flagging as opposed to it being something to worry about.

This could be a solution for those Googling and finding this thread:

AVG on win 7(probably any windows) just go to Options->Firewall Settings->Applications->Add and select:
1.The location of PRBF2.EXE in the main of BF2 folder.
2.The location of the PRLauncher by opening file location.
3.The location of the PRUpdater by opening file location.
press OK and done!
HAVE FUN GUYS!

AVG FREE...
It's not a virus.
MCAFFE didn't pick anything up on my bottom. It's unlikely a Dev would put a virus on it.
Acientman would never upload a virus.

You will notice that the message does not say its a virus per se. The launcher does lot of things that raise alarms in quite a few antivir programs, it reads files, launches and injects, so its alarming unless you inform the antivirus to ignore it.

im sorry i HAD tobut really avast....i had AVG it detected ALOT of false positives, and solved zero issues, coupled with it has extremely weak and few features. (ending in my computers demise) i now turn all my friends to avast, and they have never had an issue with it, or went to anything else afterwards.
give it a shot, im sure you'll like it, its free (forever) or paid, and DESTROYS the competition

I think your right about that, AVG is seriously paranoid. Thanks for the info!XxZIOIMIBIExX wrote:its prolly BECAUSE your running AVG XD

Okay, thanks for your feedback. I added PRUpdater.exe to the exceptions, reinstalled PR and now I am getting an error and can not run PR now. My next step is to uninstall PR again, uninstall AVG, restart, use CCleaner to tidy the registry up a bit and reinstall PR.
I will keep this thread updated until I have a success so others can find the answer if Googling. In the mean time here is the Error Report after reinstalling PR:

Yeah its labeling it as some sort of Identity risk or hazzard. I will keep everyone updated, please feel free to add any advice. I am using Windows XP 32Bit. I have been playing PRv1.0 fine until today it stated an update was available.Raic wrote:You will notice that the message does not say its a virus per se. Hmmmmm....matty1053 wrote:Acientman would never upload a virus.![]()
Naa it's fine, just AVG being over protective and hating on anything downloaded from the internets. It probably got triggered from what the updater does, run as admin, and download files off the internet and install them on your machine, then execute a program later (PRLauncher once it's updated). Typical virus behaviour, but I swear it's for a good cause

I don't know how you guys feel about this but, I have Microsoft Security Essentials for about a year or two now and it hasn't failed me yet. Suck it.

Re: Virus detected in PR Updater
All of you fools do not get it. The PR leadership is british (are they?) and pr0n and the viruses that come with downloading it are outlawed in britain. So there can not be a virus in the installer.
I am not making this up.

I'm Australian?
Anyway, is a bit weird and everything since it's a signed executable, and definitely doesn't contain viruses, but yeah, just blame AVG
