Ping equality

Post by Tolstoievski »

Is it possible to create an international server in which everyone would have the same ping? Maybe by creating "artificial ping" for players who have low pings, to delay them, or sumthing like that... I dunno...Like if in a certain server people have pings of 150, 60, 40, 20, 120 etc... They would be all delayed, somehow, to a ping of 180. If you have a ping greater than 180 you get kicked...I know what ping is, and i know how it works, and I realize it is probably technically impossible to create a system that would balance all pings, but hey, might as well try it, right? It's so annoying to get killed by people before even seeing them. Specially when you turn around a corner. It happens to me all the time since i only have HOG and ]H[ and CIA to play and i live too far away from the countries where those servers are at. It makes the game so unfair and unbalanced! For a guy with a ping of 200, playing against a bunch of dudes with pings of 20 is kinda like playing against cheaters, or at least, against people who have a HUGE advantage against you. So it would be nice to have at least one server where you could play knowing that your success is based on your skill and not on your accidental geographic location.

And when i play against foreigners in local based servers, killing them is also too easy. It's kinda like duck hunting, which kinda ruins the game in a way because you know it isn't completelly fair. I think the game would be less frustrating for everyone if it was possible to eliminate ping disparity.

Nope, unless you put it into the center of the earth, but that probably wont happen.

Seems like a lot of hassle for something that doesn't really matter too much.

I think it matters a lot! I think the difference between playing with a ping of 20 and 200 is too great to be ignored. I have played in local servers and distant servers, and in local servers I ususally dominate whereas in foreign servers I get my *** handed to me all the time. It would be nice to have at least one server where that disparity wouldn't exist. For me, It would be a dream come true... But maybe it is just me...

The problem is that no one would join this server if they could get perfectly good pings on other servers.

I like the idea, I play in the Pacific and when big d was un populated this really reduced my pleasure to the point I didn't want to play.

Only way it might work is if for example the south America and Pacific players agreed to share cost and use a server to which we've both got the same ping, or if technically possible block it at an amount we can all achieve.

But ATM the Australian server is good and has enough, however it's anyone's guess how long it'll last.

What is the server population status in south America ATM?

High ping is something that effects only a small amount of people as most people play on servers local to them, like CBPR for Brazil, BigD for Australia, or 3ebra for Russia.

I often play on TG where ping is 250+ and although its not good for CQB I just suck it up. The good teamwork offsets frustrating registration issues.

Not possible on BF2 engine. IT is possible to write in the netcode if starting from scratch.

Not possible at server end like roll up the wires or something - joke!

Some device that holds packets from 20 to 200ms?

This site mentions everyone being at 85ms

BF2 is supposed to be played at 100ms ping.
Low ping is only influence of modern technologies (post-2008 ) and probably doesn't affect gameplay at all. IIRC, BF2 is played the same with 100ms or <100ms ping...

I play on 3G from Northern Canada annnnd I do OK. Yes other people have a very very small advantage on me with ping but thats fine... I like playing as SL or medic. I could see the ping advantage being a lot more useful if CQB was done properly in this game, but as it is that advantage is so minimal....

EDIT: Oh yeah my ping averages 150-225.

You can play nicely with a 150 ping and having trouble with a 50 ping all due to the stability of your connection. If you are an european and the trans pilot is japaneese or aussie gtfo fast as you can !

I try to play on us and America Severs
But it isn't possible unless you have the us govt host the server with 1gigabyte a second speed. :)

Why would you even spend your time indoors playing with this outside...?
