I just plain can't run PR anymore

I could run .975 great. it was smooth even at high settings. .98 I had a little more trouble with, with lots of punkbuster issues and strange textures, but it still ran

I can't play PR 1.0 online at all. At first I thought it was punkbuster, but I believe I got that fixed. I know my PC is ABLE to run the game, as I can host and start a local co-op server just fine. but when I join any online server, co-op or conventional, I can join the game, join a squad, and spawn, but then I start getting 10-second lag spikes, until the game just freezes entirely and I have to alt-F4.

Did I install something wrong? I can't understand how this can be a technical issue if I can run the game smoothly offline.

This is stressing me out immensely. my favorite game/mod gets a 1.0 release, and I can't play the game. What's worse is that everyone else has different issues than mine. my game doesn't crash on startup, nor when I connect to a server, and the sound and textures are all working just fine. I just freeze after spawning.
