It's not sad, they're making do with what they have. The sounds they make are awkward though

It's not uncommon in conventional forces either to sometimes demonstrate firing or explosions by shouting, it has some advantage over training with blanks or live ammo.

Video related. They're humorously saying 'quadruple explosion' put it still has a meaning in the exercise, basically to give the idea of artillery shells landing in the area four at a time.
