Remove the mortar fire mission system
I really don't like the mortar system as it is right now in PvP gameplay. In Coop, when you're leading mortars, you ask for coordinates and a SL relays them to you. Then you fire for effect. With everyone having Mumble now, I really don't think the current system is necessary and kind of deemphasizes communicating between squads. Earlier today I was using mortars on Lashkar Valley and had a lot of fun just using loose military jargon.
"Mortars, this is Squad 2. We need some rounds dropped on Helo 5 keypad 2."
"Squad 2 this is Mortars. Copy. We're adjusting our mortars and then we'll send the rounds out."
I just found it more engaging to verbally be working with other squads instead of getting a map marker and only being able to shoot when there's an active fire mission.

Re: Remove the mortar fire mission system
This was already changed in v1.0's initial release. Check the changelog:
'[R-DEV wrote:AncientMan;1923907']
Python
- Added ability for insurgents to request officer kit from caches.
- Added a round start timer configurable by server admins.
- Increased number of L-AT kits to five per team.
- Decreased number of H-AT kits to one per team.
- Removed kit request at rally points.
- Removed the need of a mortar fire mission.
- Removed ticket cost for boats.
- Removed mortars for small maps (<2km).
- Removed the ability of the UAV to capture flags.
- Removed the possibility to "give up" until standard respawn time has expired (doesn't change anything for the player, just can't give up so soon and so there's more time for medics to get them back up).

Re: Remove the mortar fire mission system
Yeah, I was just gonna say.... didn't they remove it in 1.0???
I honestly like the old system better, it seemed more realistic. Plus, it also lets the team know that mortars are coming in somewhere on the map and they need to get the heck outta there fast. (Like they listen anyways...)
But the decent thing is that you can do mortars quicker and have a chance to take more hostiles out. Which, I find mortars very needed on some maps.

The mortar mission marks were placed sporadically around the map anyways, they were never used properly.

And if you used them properly people would simply ignore because they thought that they were randomly placed. Even though you warned trough mumble you would get into a lot of trouble all the time.
We are staying up!

I always used them properly.saXoni wrote:The mortar mission marks were placed sporadically around the map anyways, they were never used properly.
You set distance and walk a little bit to the direction of a mark, and then it's accurate

I think he means that SL just placed them in random places to allow the mortar crew to set the coordinates and fire.matty1053 wrote:I always used them properly.

Re: Remove the mortar fire mission system
I think you can still place a mortar marker/request on the map, but it's no longer required. So win-win.

Re: Remove the mortar fire mission system
Now if only we could get SLs to think about mortars and use them like they do CAS...
Right now they only get the proper team coordination if a CO is involved, and even then it's rare.

Re: Remove the mortar fire mission system
The issue used to be lazy mortar SLs that would put them mark 50 m away from their position, and not say where they are firing, then get surprised when they get TKs.
