LOOKING FOR TEXTURE ARTIST TO TEXTURE is the status.
UV unwrapping and packing is done. X-form resetting and stretching issues have been resolved. Templates are cut, and the model is on standby waiting for someone to texture it, as far as I'm concerned. Of course, Rhino'd have to be the judge of that.
An older render, but the changes made are not visible. None of what's visible has changed, so this render is still relevant to the final product.:

Here's the current UVW unwrapped/packed template:

Now, I know what you're probably going to say, and my only retort is that my biggest constraint was the piece highlighted in yellow in the last screenshot. As you can see, it takes up the entire span, and as it's a 2048x2048 image, it's going to take up that much space regardless of vertical or horizontal placement. All geometry is to the same scale as that yellow piece of geometry. Because of this, I have scaled up about as far as I could go, and I've optimized the pack several times to arrive at this one. I can't scale up anymore, and I still had a little room. So because of this, and to be conducive to doing an AO occlusion bake (
), I've spread out all of the tiny geometry that I would have previously just thrown in a pile and painted the same color. This should be much more conducive to doing an AO bake and grabbing normals, etc. Some of the more repetitive and asymmetrically equivalent geometry is still of course stacked.
But my biggest issue now, is I'm not that good in photoshop. I'm OK, but I know there are much more qualified people that could probably do a killer texturing of this well-deserving model.
SO, now all that is needed, if Rhino doesn't object, is texturing. Model at the ready in standby.

Re: [Weapon] Bren L4A4 LMG (PR:F) [WIP]
Good to see you've come back to finish this task off!
Your UV is looking good on the whole, without comparing it to the mesh with a checker texture over it to see how it looks on that BUT I think your packing could use quite a bit of work tbh before anyone textures this. You've got quite a lot of unused space and some stuff is pretty close together... Also I'm guessing quite a lot of the above could be stitched up and that will not only save quite a bit of space where you would have had to have a gap between the UVs to avoid texture bleeding, but on top of that it will be much easier on the texture artist to match the sides up, especially on things like wood and metal scratches.
So ye, think you can look into this stuff? Also if you can send me your latest files that would be good too!
Cheers and keep up the good work!

Lol just bustin' ya balls Rhino! Yeah, I'll send what I've got so far... And I'll look into what I can do to weld some more of this together like you said. But to be honest, it's been a crazy frothing-at-the-mouth last couple of days with this, and I'm going to have to step away from it for at least a day or two.

Re: [Weapon] Bren L4A4 LMG (PR:F) [WIP]
hehe no worries but its very important to get the UVs as good as they can be before anyone textures it etc as you can't fix it later, without a re-texture and if its ingame too, re-export so best to do it right the first time
Cheers!

Here's some interesting comparison of the Browning A.R. versus the Bren (L3MkI)

Bit off topic, I mean you can all day going all over youtube and find lots of BAR vs BREN vids
, at the end of the day, you are comparing a LMG and a Automatic rifle, designed for different roles.

I could texture it if you want, bit bored these days. But yeah definitely sort out any uv issues first.

Model's looking sweet! Definitely make sure the UV is good yeah. As Rhino said, stitch up or even overlay stuff where you can. The spacing looks generally alright if you ask me, but maybe changing stuff mentioned will give you more room anyways. Keep in mind where seams will be and how that will hinder the texturing process. A few screens of it with checkerboard-like material on should make any major problem areas clear.
One thing I do notice is that you gave the right side of the receiver the same space as the left side. Always consider what you can see when you're holding the object, 1st person perspective, ingame. Keeping that in mind, you can reduce the right side of the gun (which would only briefly be seen during the reload animation, if at all) by quite a lot to make room for more important areas on the top and left of the object which the player is always looking at.
Take your time, ofcourse. UVing is often a tedious, but ever important process.

Nice... Thanks for all the feedback guys! And Spush, that's great news! But like I said, give me a day or two and I'll jump back into this. Playing around in the UVWs is by far my least favorite part of all this! Need to cool down for a day or two.

bumpy, have you made any more progress on this Loke?
Not to put any pressure on your or anything but this I hope is one of the main new features of the next PR:F release

I have not... May need to step back for a while, school's kicking into high gear, and I'm in the last two-year stretch now. But I got your PM's. Strima, are you still willing to do the texturing?

Ye I posted that like a month ago now hehe{ZW}C-LOKE wrote:I have not... May need to step back for a while, school's kicking into high gear, and I'm in the last two-year stretch now. But I got your PM's. Strima, are you still willing to do the texturing?
And Strima was a Military Advisor for us, not a texture artist, hence he knows all about the Bren. Don't worry about finding someone I'll sort that bit out for ya in a bit
