Your ideal map list, and favourite first/seeding map?

Post by Heskey »

Hi all,

I'm currently devising map list ideas and I'm interested in what ideas you all have. The map gallery can be found here.

Here's some questions to consider whilst giving it some thought:
  1. Do you prefer Standard, Alternative, Large or Infantry layouts? Does it depend on the map?
  2. Servers don't seem to play Command & Control, or Vehicle Warfare modes (VW currently not optimised for 100 players due to lack of tanks, I understand). Is this a good or bad thing?
  3. Do you prefer Forest, Desert, or Urban maps? Do you think a good spread mix is important? Do you get bored if similar map times are played too often?
  4. What ratio of AAS to INS do you prefer?
  5. What are your thoughts on PRV maps? Would you like to see them played more, or are they just a fun novelty to throw in when everyone's having a good time?
  6. What are your thoughts on asset heavy maps? How often should they appear?
  7. Would you prefer to see more Infantry layouts?
  8. Would you be interest in a map rotation that's vastly different in maps and layouts than what's already available on servers?
  9. How do you feel specifically, about Al Basra, Muttrah City, Kashan Desert, and Khamisiyah, Operation Ghost Train, Operation Marlin, Asad Khal, Gaza Beach?
Also, I'd like your thoughts on the first map in a server's rotation. Consider these questions:
  1. Should the map take into account that it's likely to be the first map of the evening, and a focus on seeding and drawing in players is necessary? Or should it just be a good map?
  2. Is a Skirmish map a good idea to entice people to start joining a low population server before heading onto standard maps? Or should it be AAS or INS?
  3. If you like Skirmish maps, what do you think of maps that pit BLUFOR vs Unconventional Forces, like HAMAS, ARF, INS? (Thinking the likes of Ramiel, Korengal etc)
  4. Is the first map a good opportunity to play a PRV map so that people can have a friendly practice with a bit of a difference?
  5. What do you think of INS maps for seeding?
From the gallery, I think these would make good first seeding Skirmish maps... Which would you pick?
  1. Khamisiyah (US v MEC)
  2. Operation Marlin (FF v MEC)
  3. Silent Eagle (RU v GER)
  4. Vadso City (UK v RU)
  5. Yamalia (CAN v RU)
  6. Dovre INF (GER v RU)
  7. Hill 488 (USA v NVA)
  8. Your Skirmish Choice Here

My favorite map list is one in which I don't play the same faction twice in a row. ;)

1. Std and Skirmish
2. Not sure it was ever popular in history of PR
3. I prefer Woods or Urban area, Desert warfare is only good for asset whores, but a good mix should be present.
4. 2-3 AAS then one INS
5. I dont like PRV at all.
6. Every third of fourth.
7. F yes!
8. Dont understand the question but yes please.
9. Good maps, but some are overplayed like Muttrah and some are buggy like Kham... dat name..

1.1 I always used to start with a skirmish maps
1.2 Skirmish definitely in my opinion.
1.3 in General it does not matter, but I prefer Silent Eagle or Muttrah for that, oh Jabal is good also
1.4 IMO NO.
1.5 Bad idea?

As I said Muttrah and Jabal.

Good luck with your server - I take it your trying to setup maplist rotation and see whats best for you?

Oui my French Ami! I support you because I hate trees, especially maps with trees. So no Saarema, Kozelsk, Fools, Shija etc. But I do make an exception for Ia Drang and Silent Eagle.

Man keep it simple... way too many questions to get consistent answers.

AAS 80/20 INS

Mix all maps and layers remember to add more infantry layouts. (skirmish only for seeding)
Don't use vehicle warfare layout as it is not worthy of PR yet. Only use it for a giggle.
Command and control is only good for events as pubbers have no idea and think the game is broken when it comes up :D

Al Basrah is pretty good and balanced (unless if insurgents get real unlucky with caches in the desert)
Muttrah City. Overplayed to a point where I start to hate that map. I got nightmares about T buildings :p
Kashan Desert, Old and boring
Khamisiyah, New and exiting (even for infantry)
Operation Ghost Train, one of the best jungle maps there is. Should be played much more.
Operation Marlin, a decent map but reminds me a lot of Muttrah. More T-building nightmares ;(
Asad Khal, Meh!
Gaza Beach, is a tough ***** to crack, but when you pull it off you feel like you just made Rambo, Chuck Norris and John McClane proud.

Asad Khal Skirmish, best seeding map in my opinion.

To be fair, admins should start playing with the INF layouts of maps. And the 64 and alternative layouts. I hardly see anyone use them. To me, I love INF layouts. No annoying big assets scattered around on the map not helping anyone and just loosing tickets. For some reason my experience is that INF layout maps seem to enforce teamwork A LOT more.

[*]Do you prefer Standard, Alternative, Large or Infantry layouts? Does it depend on the map?
Everything except for large. And yes, it depends on the map.
[*]Servers don't seem to play Command & Control, or Vehicle Warfare modes (VW currently not optimised for 100 players due to lack of tanks, I understand). Is this a good or bad thing?
It is a bad thing. I am still waiting to play a decend C&C round, people never vote for it. Our server did Vehicle Warfare for seeding once, and it worked out well.
[*]Do you prefer Forest, Desert, or Urban maps? Do you think a good spread mix is important? Do you get bored if similar map times are played too often?
I prefer Forest over Urban and Urban over Desert maps. A good mix is important though. Same variety should be with 4km / 2km maps. You should never run two 4km-Maps in a row, especially not 4km desert maps.
[*]What ratio of AAS to INS do you prefer?
AAS only.
[*]What are your thoughts on PRV maps? Would you like to see them played more, or are they just a fun novelty to throw in when everyone's having a good time?
They should be played more often. I really don't get why anyone would not like PRV ;)
[*]What are your thoughts on asset heavy maps? How often should they appear?
In terms of heavy asset map = 4km map, I like it, but it depends on the map. I prefer Saarema, Vadso and Pavlovsk over Kashan and Burning. 4km/2km maps should appear in a 1:2 ratio.
[*]Would you prefer to see more Infantry layouts?
Being an infantry guy myself: Why not. But It will be less thrilling without vehicles.
[*]Would you be interest in a map rotation that's vastly different in maps and layouts than what's already available on servers?
YES!
[*]How do you feel specifically, about Al Basra, Muttrah City, Kashan Desert, and Khamisiyah, Operation Ghost Train, Operation Marlin, Asad Khal, Gaza Beach?
Basrah: Decent map.
Muttrah: Decent map, not playable with 100p, it's being played a bit too much
Kashan Desert: I don't like it.
Khamisiyah: The better Kashan, although I wish the riverbanks, village and fields would be in play more often
Operation Ghost Train: Decent map
Operation Marlin: Decent map
Asad Khal: Sadly it's not playable anymore (100p)
Gaza Beach: Decent map, rounds turn out to be a slaughterhouse too often.
[*]Should the map take into account that it's likely to be the first map of the evening, and a focus on seeding and drawing in players is necessary? Or should it just be a good map?
Focus on getting players. Putting a 2 or 4km map with 3 people seeding will not get you any players.
[*]Is a Skirmish map a good idea to entice people to start joining a low population server before heading onto standard maps? Or should it be AAS or INS?
Skirmish all the way.
[*]If you like Skirmish maps, what do you think of maps that pit BLUFOR vs Unconventional Forces, like HAMAS, ARF, INS? (Thinking the likes of Ramiel, Korengal etc)
I don't care.
[*]Is the first map a good opportunity to play a PRV map so that people can have a friendly practice with a bit of a difference?
No, because nobody will join. PRV Skirmish is good though.
[*]What do you think of INS maps for seeding?
Bad, because you will need to set a rule like 'no attack of cashes until xx players'. It's boring.

From the gallery, I think these would make good first seeding Skirmish maps... Which would you pick?[*]Khamisiyah (US v MEC) Operation Marlin (FF v MEC) Silent Eagle (RU v GER) Vadso City (UK v RU) Yamalia (CAN v RU) Dovre INF (GER v RU) Hill 488 (USA v NVA)
You should not set all the above ones unless you have at least 10 active players per team. For lower playercounts (2 - 20 players) and to start with, I would suggest you run: Jabal, Burning (not Skir Alt), Qwai, Kokan (when it's fixed), Asad Khal or Mestia.

Here's four questions to consider in addition:
  1. Which map(s) would you like to see more of? (Name, Faction, Type, Size, Layout?)
  2. Which map(s) would you like to see less of? (Name, Faction, Type, Size, Layout?)
  3. How do you feel about Kashan Desert AAS Infantry? (And no asset version)
  4. How do you feel about Muttrah City AAS Infantry? (And no asset version)
