Added 2nd HDD now FPS loss

Post by Zyco187 »

I just bought a 2nd HDD for my system and now I am getting a major FPS loss. it seems fine when im surfing the web just not when i play games. I used to run bf3 on medium settings 1080p at 50+ fps and now all i can get is 20 fps. and i used to run wow at 50 fps 1080p and now it runs at 10 fps. what do u think you can attribute this fps loss too??

Manufacturer: Me
Processor: AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1045T
Motherboard Asus M5A97 2.0 EVO
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium x64
Video Card: AMD Radeon HD 7700 1GB DDR5
Monitor 24in LED Toshiba + 20in LED HP
onbaord Sound Card 5.2 Surround Sound speakers
Keyboard: Logitech G105
Mouse: Gigabyte
Wheel: Logitech Driving Force GT
webcam: logitech 510 720p
PSU: 750w Apevia

my two HDDs
-western digital blue 500 GB FTFS w/windows 7 home premium x64 (partitioned into two drives. one being 125 GB and the other 470 GB, with win7 being on the 125 GB partition.
-western digital blue 1TB NTFS (its a backup drive where i want to keep my games)

I am also wanting to add another Asus 7770 2GB grafix card to crossfire with my current card. so should i need a bigger PSU ?

thanks

450 Watt Power Supply is required.
For one card, two crosfired? I think you should be fine with 750W.

Check yourself > ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Recommended Power Supply Wattage Calculator

Anyone else have multiple issues with 1tb WD Blue (WD10EZEX)? - Western Digital - Storage

Get this > CrystalDiskInfo - Software - Crystal Dew World and test you new drive. It might be failing

Did you defrag your new HDD after installing the games?
Did you add a pagefile to the FRONT of the new HDD disk?
How did you transfer your games from the old HDD to the new HDD?
Did you remove large amount of files from old HDD, and then not defrag the old HDD?

western digital blue 500 GB
western digital blue 1 TB

1TB has 2 platters, but also 32MB cache,

Read through this guide, and pick out which tweaks you can use:
Windows 7 Install Optimization Guide For Ssds Hdds By Sean Webster - Overclock.net Community

I also suggest downloading mydefrag a free defrag utility from mydefrag.com
Set up your new 1TB HDD as a data disk, and go to the mydefrag.com forum and download the custom Steam Games defrag scripts.

Only thing I have done with the new 1TB hdd is install it and created a NTFS partition on it using the windows 7 Disk Management tool. i just did a quick format. The only thing i have done with the new hdd is move my music cds there and also redownloaded bf3 and intalled it on the new hdd. it dosnt matter which drive i have bf3 on now i still only get 20fps. I am thinking maybe this could be a PSU issue ???

Not likely. Disconnect new drive and try then and see what happens.

First: WD has a free diagnostic software program you should download to test that new HDD.
WD Support / Downloads / SATA & SAS / WD RE2

While using that product, write down the exact model number of your HDDs.

Second: In the link above there should be a tutorial on creating a pagefile on the front of your new HDD. If not, search google for creating a pagefile at front of the secondary HDD.

Third: Almost no chance it is your PSU, unless the PSU is about to explode due to a physical component failure. If you smell burning, turn off your PC now. :P

A WD Blue 1TB HDD only uses like 15 Watts maximum
out of the 750W max of your PSU, that new HDD isn't stressing the PSU.

Did you properly uninstall BF3 from your old HDD?
IDK much about BF3, I just bought it this month.
You should make sure you totally uninstalled the old BF3, use something like CCLeaner to clean the registry of any extra reigstry entries for BF3, reboot, then install on the new HDD.
