PR Map RIP Thread

Post by Heskey »

Hi all,

Thought I'd make a thread to honour the memory of the maps that have come and gone over the years, whether they're personal favourites or not. Maybe someone will stumble in and explain difficulties with their design, and why they were removed?

I remember two maps quite fondly, as the UK v PLA:

Image

Can't remember its name. UK started in the top left, and China in a fortress in the top right - it was a bugger to penetrate. A very forest-y map with a dry ravine running through the middle of the map with a fortress in the middle, and there was a small set of buildings in the bottom left where PLA used to ambush the Brits coming out of main.

Used to be a staple of the [T&T] server back in 2007 and was where I kept bumping into Sadist_cain and Commando101 who eventually recruited me.

Secondly:

Image

Can't remember its name either, but the UK started in bottom left and PLA in the top right. It was a fairly flat semi-foresty map with some hillocks along the south, a lake in the middle with a road running all the way around it, and a settlement along the left hand side. It was one of the first PR maps I played when I first looked at PR in 0.5 I think it might have been? I remember loving the rally point idea on this map, and it was one of the only maps that felt like it took place in a 'real' living place - it was very serene!

I also recall a Brit v Militia map that was similar to Dragon Fly, but the 'city' area was a massive oil platform. That was in 0.98; what's happened to it?

Fond memories of the winter map that was released in December 2008 I think it was?

I remember an awful map with MEC on it where they started in the top left and had BMP-2s and tanks, on a desert with lots of oil rigs and pipelines.

Please jog my memory of other PR maps that have since passed away!

Seven Gates, that was it!

Quinling it was not though; it was a very small map, a 1km one I think. (I don't miss Quinling =P )

Inishall Forest - that was it.

There's loads of quality maps in that montage that should be back, Hongshangu; I don't recall it but it looks awesome! Al Kufra Oil Fields was the horrid MEC map I was referring to.

100p on these maps would be terrible. It's really not worth the effort for anyone to put time in these maps.

Probably because they had nothing to do with PR... I suggest you ask that question on the DCon forums

There are various maps people miss, myself included, but taking the time to think how they would fit in the gameplay of the current iteration of the mod is important. Most, if not all, of the maps just wouldn't work very well for public play.

In fact, I would make the argument that Jabal Al Burj should be retired but that is for another thread. ;)

However, keeping in line with this thread's theme.... I remember one particular map that was very mountainous with many tiny jungle valleys. I think it featured U.S. vs PLA. I remember keeping your squad rally hidden was crucial as it was kind of difficult establishing FOBs. I'm sure I could find it if I took the time but im on my phone so it would be a chore.

Mao Valley I think? Swampy forest in a narrow circular valley at the base of a mountain in the middle. Loved that map.

For me EJOD desert stands out clearly still with the US at the bottom, with MEC at the top and a small city in the middle.
While MEC had a tank the US had a TOW Humvee to counter it. There was only really 3 ways to get through the city. East, West or Center.
It kinda felt like a skirmish map with assets, which made it a very odd but kinda fun map.

I'm not going to cry about why this map is no more since it is obviously because it offers no real tactical solutions except kill or be killed, and the map is very small, and makes flanking nearly impossible.

It gave me a feeling of trench warfare though which was kinda nice at the time :)
You could quickly tell if one of the teams sucked as the round would be ending before it really began :D

Ooooh Sunset City was terrible! Do miss EJOD Desert though; I remember it featuring when the DEVs announced new firing sounds at distances.

Na, that wasn't EJOD. That was Operation Archer and Ramiel.

I loved EJOD back in the day :) . Nowadays it would be way too small. If the city was made bigger it would be more interesting.

What ever happened to this concept? Assymetrical warfare with conventional armies used to be awesome. I remember how I used to love Qwai River back in .75 mostly because of this, pitching a light humvee based usmc force against chinese heavy armor / mechanized infantry. Qwai being such a tight map actually evening the odds out pretty good. Would be nice to see that coming back in some maps or layers.

EJOD was my virgin map! I still remember when I was playing on this map for the first time and We got raped by some Random ARs camping our main! :p

Sunset City was a good CQB map. Fight over the city. But it's way too small for current PR. :(

Seven Gate is classic! I do wish DEVs can remake it and put it back. (Do miss British officers' beret too!)
