Re-implementing Nightvision?

Post by Bluedrake42 »

We're looking into bringing back nightvision, tested it on special forces... seemed to work well enough. Does anyone have details about how nightvision works and why/how much it was messing up in Project Reality?

'[R-DEV wrote:Rudd;1822311']could you set up a proof of concept in 973 please?

I too experimented heavily with nightmaps in the past, however making the night stuff work in latest versions has been impossible for various reasons.

1) Latest graphics cards often have issues with night shaders, even in BF2-SF.
2) There are a number of new effects that need to be loaded for night maps resulting in CTD currently, though I think that is surmountable.

here is a video I made of my efforts (v0.85?)
Xfire - Gaming Simplified

You can see one particular bug which is a big problem, whenever a dynamic light touches a static, the static goes black.

I think we can get around that tbh, however it would have to be by using a modified thermal vision rather than the in-built night features of BF2. Otherwise we'd have to do it without any dynamic lights, which wouldn't be a huge problem if we can get the night mode actually working in 0973 properly.

NVGs have always been possible, had them way back in v0.5 iirc on Bi Ming etc, but the shaders have been broken since then and we haven't gotten around to fixing them, mainly because we hadn't had any decent way of doing night maps as a map which was just night (ie, not alt day and night modes) was quite unpopular.

Some of the variables that was used to configure NVG are already used to other features, which would have to be removed or recoded, and as number of variables are limited, it might be impossible to simply recode it. I'm sure it's used in compass, but there might be few more, so that ones would have to be recoded.

I believe that was one of the ideas, rework the thermal shaders for nvg or something. Or we talked about that sometime ago, never really got around to it.

Thermals are better for contrast and for more accurate differentiation between a bush and a ghillie suit.

I think perhaps we should focus on getting as meany thermal assets to as many players as would be realistically applied.

Or just make ENVGs, but that might be even less of a balance.

There's a mod called Battlefield All-in-one with modified shaders to work with BF2 Maps.

I modified Dalian Plant to use the nightvision with no problems by editing the init.con, adding the required map files to the map folder, modifying the BF2 kits to add the nightvision but when I made it to work with PR, it crashed with an application error - due to probably me not porting the nightvision menu configurations properly.

It uses the BF2 Defibrulator firing sound as a Nightvision On sound, which I didn't add.
