Performance issues

Post by 22cal »

Yesterday, I installed a XFX Radeon R9 270x 2GB DDR5 to replace my MSI gtx 460 Cyclone 768MB.

Yesterday, my PC was running fine. Some spots that were CPU intensive stayed relatively the same like the gas station in Fallujah. All the other games increased by 20 to 40 fps.

The problem now is that today, my performance on every game is terrible. Every game is choppy, with 20fps or worse.

Could it be my 500w PSU, my 4GB 1333 RAM, or that my GPU failed on me?

I did notice my CPU has been running almost on full usage when playing games. RAM on 80% usage on average in game. and my GPU is only being 30%-50% load in game.

My guess is that my power consumption is strained, and that is causing my performance to go down, but why the day after is was performing smoothly.

This could be a very obvious question but; do you have the drivers installed for the GPU?

That's the only thing I can think of right now..

I have the GTX 760 since a couple of days and that thing kills everything on high and max AA, there's one place where it goes to 30 fps sometimes in Fallujah, but that's only when I'm recording.

It's strange, because your card is on par with my card :s

Thanks Careless,
I decided to check my Registry one more time and found an old NVIDIA driver hidden in some files. I deleted it, and rebooted my AMD drivers.
Now my performance is back to normal, if not better than yesterday.

No problem, sometimes problems are hidden in the most obvious things we don't think about :D

Just tweak some settings in the Catalyst Control Center to get better quality and performance. PR looks so much more awesome with high AA and high settings. I'm pretty sure your computer can handle it!

I know with Nvidia cards you can change AA to 32x with Nvidia control panel, maybe the same feature is in catalyst control for AMD cards, PR looks even better ! ! :D (Though I have performance decrease of 5-10 fps on my Gainward Phantom GTX 570... :/ But that's PR 1.0 fps -.- )

I just set all my Catalyst settings to "Use Application settings." Just feel more performance that way.

My old Nvidia card had a program that would tweek my games to the right settings for best performance and graphics. Wish Catalyst could individual set each game like that.

I also use this.
But if you go to "Adjust image settings with preview" and select "Use my preference" and set it to "quality", it will automatically max out everything I suppose.

I use it for PR only because otherwise the temps just rise too much when playing RTW2 or BF3 :-(

Yeah, that's what I'm using, Litoralis, though I have the other option ("additional" sth.) in "Mode", probably how Careless has it.

Thanks Daniel and Careless,

For me, with a GTX 670, the settings Careless posted were definitely better from my viewing perspective,
and I'm now using them every time I play PR.

Litoralis, did you already experience the massive sudden fps drop in 1.1.1.0 ??
