If I wanted to play around with making a new game mode, what do I need to learn in addition to Python coding?

Look here: BF2 Technical Information Wiki and read about events/objects/etc. You can also look at the vanilla bf2 python files. That should be all you need to get started.

Also another quick question for anyone who knows.

What tools do we have for making machinima? Do we have to use BattleRecorder to make movies if we're working with an organized team?

If you are talking about getting different viewpoints or whatever, on local and private servers you can use the PRbots: 'rcon prbot1/prbot2/prbot3/prbot4' in chat (Not console), or you can use 'rcon camera' (I think?) in the same place. These mean that you will not be taking part however?

Yeah. I would be the camera. I've been toying with the idea of a PR movie that's more than a montage of clips and BattleRecorder footage. I wanted to get some experience with it before I decide if I want to take it further or not.
