[Help] Light map resizing

Hello

Going thru rabbit's Shitokan Island thread, Ive noticed the guys talking about LM resizing in order to have a lower number of atlases.
now, being the slow head that I am, can anyone point me to some sort of tutorial on what needs to be done? I couldn't really find a tut for this issue which is very important, client wise
What object's LM's can be resized? For example, an object like a crate, tire stack brickwall pillar or brickwall segment and alike, can be resized(decreased)? what are the general guide lines?
