Fps Problems, Not Playable

Post by Probo »

I recently just installed PR 1.0 after not playing for months being away from PR. Ever since the new update I can barely keep a solid FPS above 20, im usually stuck around 10-15 fps. I know I can definitely run PR, I've been playing the mod for years now on high settings, now I cant even play on low. I've searched the forums, done every kind of tweak and fix you could do but nothing seems to work for me. Is my rig just too old for the new PR?

Someone please help! Im trying to get back in PR and its becoming such a hassle!!!

Thank you,
Probo

This may seem counterintuitive, but try turning your settings up to max and see if the FPS are the same or less than on low.

I've tried this before and tried again for the sake of your post but I still average 15-20. I have also tried process lasso/set affinity. Nothing seems to want to work for me. :-(

I just checked it out, your GPU is actually quite low powered... mine [HD5870 1GB] is now going on 4.5 years old but it averages 2-3x higher on benchmarks than yours
http://www.hwcompare.com/995/geforce-gt ... n-hd-5870/

It could simply be hardware requirements being higher than your specs... although on all low I think you should be able to handle the game.

Quick question... If you play BF2 on all-high does it have great FPS?

I don't understand, I used to be able to play PR seamlessly. Have the requirements gone up since the latest patch?

I'm around 50 fps on all high on vanilla in full servers.

Ok, analizing, here we go:
Your "AMD Phenom(tm) 9600 Quad-Core" is from 2007/08, a bit old and for today's performance 95W is quite energy-hungry, but still, it is a good quad-core with 4? 512 KB L2 Cache and 2048 KB L3 cache, running @ 2,3 GHz which is MORE than enough for BF2/PR. ;) 8)

On the memory (RAM): 4 GB is not really much anymore today (usually at least 6, but most common today is 8 GB), but worst is, that your RAM (even though 4 GB should be just enough/fine for PR even on max. graphics-settings) is only 667 MHz RAM, seems to be quite "old" DDR2 RAM (todays DDR3 standard, which is there already for quite some years now, is running 1333 MHz at least, common is though 1600 MHz, like mine.)
Your 667 MHz-RAM also makes me believe your motherboard (ASUS) is quite old, and only supports DDR2 RAM... (and yes, just found out, only DDR2 RAM support: https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M2N68AM/#overview quote: "2 x240-pin DIMM, Max. 4 GB, DDR2 1066/800/667/533 ECC,Non-ECC,Un-buffered Memory
Dual Channel memory architecture
*DDR2 1066 is supported by AM2+ CPU only")

You could go to a DDR2 1066 RAM, but main-problem is the limit of 4 GB on the motherboard... so if you can afford it anytime, a motherboard upgrade is wise, with 8 GB RAM being best. ;) )

Ok, for the GPU, the GTS 250 is mid-range (and from the year 2009...), in between performance of todays GeForce GT 640 (quite low end) and the better Geforce GTS 450, but in general, your GPU is as good as the best GT 640 and performance wise a bit less powerful then the also old GTX 260 (from 2008, which was almost high-end back then).

So, if you can afford it (dunno what your status is), you could enjoy PR as it's best with a new ~ 180 $ quad-core from Intel's i5 class, a quite cheap GTX 660 or 760 (those are great and still good-price GPU!!) and some 8 GB DDR3 standard (for example running 1600 MHz. Btw. there are already motherboards today which support the new DDR4 standard!! :D But of course those are still too expensive for everyone, including me of course, I am not rich either... :p :) )

And if you want to go cheap, buy a AMD quad-core, AMD graphics card, OR, directly an a new mainstream "Kaveri" quad-core from AMD, where the graphics are INTEGRATED IN THE CPU!! :D So no graphics card needed then for you, THAT would be the REAL cheap solution. ;) 8)

Daniel, as always, please let's refrain from suggesting people spend money before they have exhausted every other option. Also your analysis about memory speeds is moot, 667mhz ram and 1066mhz ram have no appreciable difference in gaming performance. People generally buy higher FSB capable ram if they need bandwidth intensive performance or have to overclock without an unlocked multiplier.

Your analysis on his CPU is also rather lacking, as the phenom 9600 has a rather low IPC compared to even the intel equivalents of the day, and more-so when compared to 'modern' processors. Most players in PR are CPU-bottlenecked due to the drawcalls that the maps burden the engine with. On fallujah, ramiel, marlin etc (extensive cities) the drawcalls can reach 2500-3000 per rendered frame, which is huge, and that's exactly the point when everyone's FPS drop way down (with a corresponding drop in GPU utilization, I might add).

The only way to mitigate the above is to throw high-clocked, high IPC processors at the issue (until such a time that the team can magically reduce the draw calls for virtually every object in the game). If you can't do that, reducing any background processes that chew CPU cycles will help... so for example game-booster etc.

So yes, while throwing money at the problem can help, I'm guessing someone who is using hardware from 5-7 years ago probably hasn't upgraded due to life constraints, not due to some strange affinity for their current parts.

The requirements have indeed increased, and if you're not running 99FPS in vanilla bf2, PR will not run smoothly :(

The biggest issue (which still confounds me) is that since 1.0, it seems like the 'LOW' settings make virtually no difference in performance, whereas previously they could indeed help with FPS.

First of all, I am sorry, Psyrus and Probo, if it somehow sounded harsh or so to buy new parts, that is not what I am demanding (yet).

Psyrus, I mentioned 1333 as a todays minimum standard, and not your mentioned "1066". also, I meant DDR3 on 1333 MHz ofc, which is lots faster than DDR2 (since it is older generation) if DDR2 even could handle 1333 MHz (I dunno that).

On the drawcalls, then the PR devs should FINALLY optimize the cities on your mentioned maps, since even (probably) todays best CPU, some 12 core with some dual GTX 780 Ti - SLI won't give you 60 fps minimum all time (because of PR's draw calls... or was that a problem in vBF2 already? then why did they, DICE, not fix the graphics engine to handle less draw calls? :/ )

And on the 50 fps on vanilla BF2, wow, that is not even the refresh-rate from monitors, so even if I would have 50 fps max. in vBF2 I would probably notice it/lag in gameplay... :/ :(

And your "issue" about the low-settings in PR 1.0 and still no fps-increase, afaik the devs "removed" the setting for "low" gfx so finally everything is more fair on gameplay (so others cannot easily see enemies through grass etc.), so there is no otherway (luckily for those of us PR players who REALLY want to play literally "realistic", on MAX. settings) that people will have advantage anymore! :) 8)

And I think if you are sure it is not that the devs removed the "low" setting, the problem might be you are not the one and only "AncientMan" here, who is the only one who could probably possibly know what is causing this gfx-on-low-still-low-fps issue, since he is the leader and was the only one to enable for all PR-players to patch PR to a new version using the PR-patcher... :/ :(

Did you even read what I wrote? In another thread [please read carefully]:
https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f26-pr ... ost1977675

DDR2-800 vs DDR3-1333, Does Speed Matter?

Please become a little more familiar with the workings of RAM before advising people about it. Memory bandwidth considerations have their place in computing decisions... not in this thread though.

You're going to need to do a little reading on draw-calls to understand...
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/485 ... -expensive
What are Draw calls

I don't want this thread to become too sidetracked about education on the workings of hard/software though.

Please at least try Gamebooster, Probo. If possible, do a proper benchmark test before and after to see if it makes any gain, noticeable or not.
