No CD key checks?

Post by waldov »

I know pirating, talk of pirating or anything pirating is frowned upon in most parts and so I'm not going to dwell on that aspect here but I do wonder, why do most servers require CD key identification? I know of a few who don't and my friend who has a copy of PR (literally a copy and paste job from my legit PC version) has never encountered a single problem on these servers through all his time playing, the question is why are more servers not like this? I'm assuming its a security issue but what exactly would the server risk by not not verifying CD keys? Its not as though hackers flock to PR desperately trying to rack up kills for unlocks and higher ranks.

I know people will try flood this thread with "why not swallow your pride and buy it for 5 dollars etc." but that's not the point, as ive mentioned already I happen to own a legit copy. I'm simply curious as to why most servers bother with CD key verification in general, does anyone know?

iirc the CD-key is bond to your account and your install

Did your friend and you played together on the same server at the same time? It would surprise that this is possible.

Because without CD key check it's too easy to grief\cheat\abuse.

Time to give up and respawn.

Anybody can change their alias so the key hash is the best method to identify and limit the access to servers of griefers / cheaters.

Letting your friend use your key is opening yourself up to a world of hurt... what happens one day if he fucks around on a server or worse uses hacks..... your reputation is at risk...

I'm pretty sure you can actually just change your CD key in the PR menu so I don't see how well it serves in deterring hackers, not that hackers are an issue anyway

You'll need to have a legit cd key though. You can't prevent people from buying the game again...

Whilst I think you are under-estimating the number of hackers out there (remember only the really stupid ones ever get caught) you are ignoring the griefing issue which has a big impact on a game in PR. Server admins (well most) share hashes to stop these players from ruining the games across the popular servers.

Question's been answered. I think the thread has served its intended purpose, and to avoid it slipping into the illegal territory, I'll give this a lock.
