Can you confirm you installed up to BF2 1.5 patch? Also make sure to select the Battlefield 2 directory. For BF2 from steam, it may look like C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Battlefield 2

The original disk is more than fine. In my opinion it's optimum. Seems to me your PR and/or patches are not arriving in your EA GAMES root folder via a registry path discrepancy. Check to make sure the paths for patches, PR, etc match your root folder's version. If not make necessary changes.

This is what my original 2005 DVD version of BF2 looks like from my registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Electronic Arts\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2
I believe the newer disks have something like; "\DICE\Battlefield 2" instead of "\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2" This might be your discrepancy.

This is what I always do and everyone should as well; Before adding patches, mods, etc, after initial BF2 install run the game "out of the box" (single player works) just to verify for your registry the proper path. After all if the original install is corrupt or misdirected how can you hope to direct any mods or patches? Also after taking note of path, also test the game after every patch increment just to be scientific about it.

To sum up, all your versions of BF2 (PR included) must match root one way or another whether you go with default or you manually change values. Hope this helps.
