Noob question

Post by vato »

Why the Project Reality team don?t make a mod using Battlfield 3 or 4 or even other game with awesome graphics? Battlefield 2?s graphics are not the best.

Using other engine would be fantastic, it would have more functionalities and better visuals.

I know they are doing a pr2 with cryengine but why they still working on PR:BF2?

Short answer: They can't

Long answer:
When a game is released Devs can allow the community to make modifications, these can be from maps, textures, sounds or complete games like Project Reality.

Battlefield 3 and 4 don't allow this modifications, meaning there's no legal tools to modying the game to make something awesome like PR, unlike BF2 that did allowed.

Dont question the wikipedia! Just because it reports different things on different languages does not make it unreliable source!

console port to PC, revenue stream from making downloadable paid for add-on, "DLC" PC community did it for free. Publishers want more money so stopped PC users from doing it.

Haven't they ( EA ) even mention that modding is a dying breed as the reason why they won't bother with mod tools?

No their main reason was that the engine and game became so complicated, no modder out there could handle it. Even with a simple dev-kit. So they did us a favour by preventing us to waste hours of work, trying to mod the game without success.

Isn't that really a kind move by them? We should totally thank them for thinking ahead of us by buying their new DLC's!

Yes we all know that modders are stupid kids that only know how to press play and that they are not the people that end up working in professional game studios. People in game studios are university students and scientists that never made a mod in there life.

Cause EA and Dice are scumbags. And the graphics aren't that great in BF4, they are just dumb visuals. Cry Engine, can actually mimic real life lighting and such.
Plus, According to many players. The Engine is extremely complicated to use. Even the Devs of BF4 have issues.
Using other engine would be fantastic, it would have more functionalities and better visuals.
Yes, it's obvious. But PR:BF2 IMO will always be the best.

It's their option to work on it. Plus, why not work on it? If someone did a timeline of the history of PR on Bf2. It would blow your mind up. They got so far. Plus, I think they can use this as a 'experience' on their resumes if they join gamestudios/marking stuff.

Well, modders are from everywhere and with all kind of skills... opening the game to mods would have made them able to get help from the entire modding community to solve those bugs quickly and see what people really wanted.
See a popular mod with bug fixes and such, absorb them into the main game, they have no excuse on this one, they're just "meh".

PR:BF2 is the best because there is 10 years of work behind it, getting to the same level with such small team would take years again, this is why PR:BF2 wont die so soon but it will eventually.
This is also the reason why they didn't switch to another game to mod, there is too much content on PR:BF2 to leave it like that.

I prefer mods, modders and mod tools over P2W DLCs simply because of the availability and community.

A lot of it has to do with licenses too btw, why they don't allow mods.

If you want to allow mods it's something that you have to keep in mind from the beginning of building the engine(and work pipeline). DICE said no to mods when they started making frostbite engines years ago. It's a lot easier and allows to use lots of third party licensing so they don't have to make certain things themselves. So yeah, business as usual with EA :) So never expect mod tools with frostbite, simply never.

That's why I prefer companies that DO keep in mind modding from the start. They might not release modding tools at the start but some just wait to perfect them. Like the WarThunder team. They know how vital the community modding can be to keep a game interesting. Those are the good guys :D

lol, you almost got me there :P

What current mass-shooter out there is moddable at the moment?

ArmA. That's it. It's pathetic. And it's not even a mainstream game.

Thank you for all the answer.
Maybe they make those games unmoddable because mods like this (PR) would be better than their stupids games

There are 3 in development

PR:BF2
PR:ARMA3
PR2 (Cryengine)

Expanding the franchise is a good idea since BF2 is like what, 10 years old now? It's time to move on to bigger and better things (while maintaining the BF2 version that we all love)

We need a better Engine to boost PR, that's why...
ARMA and CE3 is a better engine.

Bigger is better.
More is better.

But I think Dev's can agree with this:

"PR is pretty much it's own game now"

Being afraid of losing money because of succesful mods (which supposedly wouldnt help people to buy DLCs) is quite a weird thought.

Actually modding can make EA earns a lot of money, but there's no real guarantee : if a mod becomes ultra popular, a lot of people who didnt know the vanilla game (or knew about it but really didnt care of) will buy the vanilla game just to play the mod. So that'll still make money at the end. That's pretty much what happened to DayZ, or CS.

But then again you need some chance, and even though PR can be the best game ever made for few people like me, PR wont ever get an incredible success that could make EA earn a lot of money and possibly pay attention to it, as it's definitely not casual friendly.

You can easily look at ARMA 2 and DAYZ...

DayZ MOD made BI a TON of money....

BF2 MODS made EA a DECENT amount of money...
