[Video] Encoding help

Post by DesmoLocke »

I'm curious as to what you guys are using to edit PR gameplay videos. Sony Vegas? Adobe Premiere? All I have right now is Windows Movie Maker. :? ??:

What are your encoding settings? An average hour-long PR round is just under 20GB when recorded with Nvidia Shadowplay.

Let me know if the 1080p looks ok to you guys. I'm sorry about the audio. The last version of Shadowplay didn't have push-to-talk functionality for the mic so I just leave it on to record all the Mumble channels and TeamSpeak chatter.

I have a 4TB drive getting full of complete PR rounds that I want to upload soon.

I found using DebugMode Frameserver together with Avysnth and Megui using x264 as the best method. perfect clear quality and very small file size.

Problem, its pretty complicated if you are new to it. You are basically using the Frameserver to stream the video output from Vegas to Megui, via avysnth and then use x264 encoder and a quality-level you wish to render it.

I always wanted to make a tutorial about it, but never found time. Maybe I'll do it at some point.

Only guide I found on the net so far:

BBMOVIES

Seems to have most important things in it. Even though I am used to do some steps a little different. But give it a try.

Sorry for DP, but may I ask how you record full rounds with shadowplay? If I record manually it just stops recording after reaching the time limit. (max 20min). and you have to restart the recording with another button stroke. But you most likely don't notice the end of a record and therefore miss several minutes until you press it again.

Pretty sure that's a bug. I can record for hours and it wont stop until I either run out of space or manually stop it.

As for the OP; I use Sony Vegas. Been using it for years and can't be bothered to start learning a new program yet, and I'm not sure how many other programs support batch rendering on the same level.

Your render settings looks great, what bitrate do you use when rendering? How long did it take to render the video compared to the length of it? For me, rendering are usually 3x the length of the video.

Well tbh I didnt try to record manually since the release anymore. BAck then it was like I said, wasn't a bug.

Seems they changed that within some patches but I never bothered trying it. Always using ShadowMode anyways. But good to know you can record full rounds too now.

Yep, probably a bug. I have no problem recording for hours to a 4TB hard drive. Including the desktop if I forget to stop the recording since I have that option on.

I've heard good things about Sony Vegas and I will be trying it sometime soon.

The bitrate was right at 28 Mbps. I adjusted it manually in Windows Movie Maker so every minute of video was around 200MB or so. And rendering in WMM was surprisingly fast. I'd say it was about 1:1 video length versus rendering time. Then again, I have a decent CPU with a slight overclock.

Thanks for the input guys.

Well, Spook, GeForce Experience 1.8 was released already beginning december with this feature:

"With the release of GeForce Experience 1.8, we’ve implemented many of the community’s most requested enhancements. First and foremost, Windows 7 users can now save up to 20 minutes of Shadow Mode footage, just like Windows 8 users, and Windows 7 Manual Mode is no longer restricted to a single 3.8GB file – footage is now recorded continually across multiple files until the moment you run out of HDD or SSD space."

And GeForce Experience 2.1 got released beginning of this month:

Release Highlights

ShadowPlay

Adds in-game framerate counter
Shadow Mode can now be used with desktop capture
Adds push-to-talk functionality
Extends capture resolution up to 2560 x 1600
Improved audio synchronization when editing with Adobe Premier
Improved Twitch streaming stability
ShadowPlay on/off state now persists across self-update

General

Improves self-update installation speed
Various bug fixes

I was usually reading every single changelog because I was waiting for that to be implemented but somehow overlooked it.
