MG3 R.O.F.

Post by crazygamelover »

Does anyone know the rate of fire of the MG3? According to the PR wiki, it says that it's 900rpm, but I thought that it would be higher. To my knowledge, the MG3 is just a 7.62x51mm NATO conversion of the MG42, so it should have the same rate of fire: ~1200 rpm. I thought the that the BF2 engine would allow this, since its the ROFs can go in increments of 300; 300, 600, 900, 1200, etc. Is there a reason why the MG3's rate of fire is so slow?

Because it is the closest possible to its actual firerate. You are right that the BF2 allows only certain ROFs, but those are not 300 increments. Only ROFs that divide 1800 are allowed. So from top to bottom it goes: 1800, 900, 600, 450, 360, 300...

If i'm not mistaken,
MG42 firerate is 1500 rpm and MG3 is 1200 rpm (in real life) - check out the mod files to see the in-game rate of fire :)

IIRC MG42 later had some fixes to bolt(to improve reliability) that toned down rate of fire to around 900.

1200 is the theoretical firerate possible. According to the german wikipedia the effective firerate is 300 rpm. (This takes into account the overheating and cooling down of the barells if it's not changed.)

300 rpm is pure random number.
I shot a lot with MG 3 and if you use it as LMG you will carry MAX 250 rounds with you and you have a "ammo boy" (called MG 2 while the MG 3 gunner is called MG 1) with as much ammo as he can carry, which isn't that much because 500 rounds will weight around 14 Kilo and that is more then the MG 3 weights.
So normaly a MG team will have MAX 750 rounds and of course you wouldn't want to waste all that in less then 3 min.
So you will never go fullauto for more then a splitsecond, but do many really short bursts.
Firering any MG for more then 3 seconds straight is a pure waste of ammo.

I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.

They told us a story in Afghanistan.

There was once a French patrol moving out and they moved into an ambush.
They fired all their ammo, ALL of it and before any reinforcements could arrive all French where dead.
Only few of the dead where shot in the firefight but got behaded by talibans as they run out of ammo.

When it came to stuff ammo in our car for the first time I packed it full with everything I could get my hands on just "to be safe".

Look this vid for ammo waste: FIREFIGHT ON HELMET CAM IN AFGHANISTAN - PART 1 | FUNKER530 - YouTube
I guaranty not a single bullet hit a taliban.
Its fun to shot like crazy though.
