Perfomance issue with current patch

After reading the threat of Major Perfomance issue, I was advised to post it here.

I have not been playing since v0.96 or so. With the latest patch of 1.2, I am experiencing a lot of Frame issues. I run my game on i5-650 with 12GB DDR3 with ASUS GTX570 Cu2. In v0.96; I had no frame issues except with frame dropping to the lowest of 56 in Fallujah West. My graphic settings back then was the default Medium with AA 2x.

With the current latest PR version, my FPS has been performing very poorly. I get rubber band in some maps, most notably in Dovre, Sbeneth outskirt (with frame drop all the way to 22. The max fram is 35 which is frustrating when I do TRANS, in which I quit and not play the round). The smoothest map, Muttrah City gives me 60 FPS reading which never happened in v0.96. I thought that my internet connection was to blame so I tried creating local server, but no - rubber banding and low FPS still on Sbeneth.

Ping for the US servers has been extremely high for me, sometimes going up to 514 (in Candy server). Sometimes, my play screen freezes just as though the server is about to crash - but then comes back to motion after 10 sec. EU server gives me a high (343 ping) but consistent connection.

I read the change log, I do not remembering spotting changes in the graphic engine - only supposing that CryEngine 3 is for PR 2.0.

If it is the later, I don't know how to set it to smaller size. If it's for the memory size, I initially had 4 GB, but realise it was not enough for my LightRoom 5.4. So I bought a further 8GB since it's a bargain.

Oh hey Psyrus; I haven't caught up your replies on one of my thread. Yes, my specs sure doesn't match up with my frames (as it once did).

I am in exam period; I will sure try window size, but I am guessing that the FPS performance will get better in Windowed mode because it's smaller resolution.

Nevertheless, I will give your programs on the screenshot a try. I have GPUz installed already, and I have been monitoring it by constantly switching windows - but noticed that it has a delay when I keep switching window, it cuts its performance by half (all parameters), and then drops to full idle.

Hi mate, I heard that you are having the same FPS issues as me. what I did to solve the problem is I updated my nivada driver first. then I went to the NIVADA control panel---->Manage 3D settings-------> program settings-----> try to find the PRBF2 and project reality: BF2 launcher.

If you can not find em then add them. after that click on PRBF2 thats in option 1. the go to option 2 and look for power managment mode. you can change that to adaptiv or prefer maximum preformence. try both and launch the game. for me adaptive solved the problem.
another thing that helped me is chaning the resolution of the game. for me 1680 x 1050 works pretty good.

I just ran a check for driver on Nvidia website, apparently I ain't at the latest. So I just updated it. Also added Project Reality: BF2 launcher. I won't be scalling the resolution, because I used to have smooth frame at 1920x1080.

I will still give psyrus screenshot when more time allow. Thanks for taking part in solving my issue. Will keep you updated.

EDIT: Tried Mark's method (on Nvidia Control Panel) after updating my driver to the latest. The frame actually got better on Sbeneth Outskirt; which is the one that experienced the most massive frame drop. However, I was still getting rubber bands. I am not sure if it was associated with the "clouds" shifting in the sky - because I remembered that we had a static sky in previous versions. Muttrah city also gave higher FPS readings of 98 (on carrier); dropping to 50 in Suburbs and West City center. All settings are on the Medium default except with Shadow changed to LOW and 2x AA.

EDIT: May I add, that switching my settings to High; barely made my FPS changed in Kashan - at Highest setting (except Dynamic Shadow set to Low) - it performs 98 - to 100 in the US main base.

I'm not familiar with that CPU in particular, but when I try to weigh-up the different CPUs here that people are using with PR, particularly those encountering fps problems, I tend to look through this list to see where it ranks. Based on that list, the Core i5-650 ranks 4 tiers down from the latest and greatest.

It seems to me that PR, for whatever reason, really requires a strong core (single-threaded performance) these days to run consistently smooth, way beyond what people might think for such an old game. It would not surprise me to find the i5-650 being the reason frame rates are lacking here.

Do other folk running that CPU experience about the same? I suppose it would be good if we could start getting a list of CPUs and their relative performances together here for people to reference so people know what to expect. Not sure how to go about doing that though...

As you can see, your GPU is only working at less than 20% capacity due to PR's unoptimized and unavoidable drawcall excesses, so as far as I can tell, you can set your graphics settings to all high (+ highest AA) and you should have the exact same or like just ~5% less because currently your GPU has lots of headroom.

Here's a test on Sbeneh outskirts insurgency mode, I drove around the city in a truck for about 2 minutes along the same path, one with all high settings, one with all low. Results:

Right, single core speed and calculations per second are the limiting factor here.
The BF2 engine cna use two cores,
to get more out of your PC, you might consider overclocking,

Prerequisite:
1. a motherboard that is overclockable
2. a CPU cooler that can cool an OC'ed Clarksdale CPU . A cheap Hyper Evo 212+ Cooler Master: Hyper 212 EVO will do fine. Will cost about US$33
3. and CPU paste to install the CPU cooler. Many on the market, will cost about US$10

In general OC'ing your CPU will extend the life of your PC, of course it's up to you to decide if the $45 and few hours of working on the OC optimizing is worth your time, or to put the money and time aside to upgrade your entire CPU/mobo/RAM at some point in the future.

Thanks for joining. My brother has an i7 core and runs smoothly with no problem at all; and I meant smooth as BF3 smoothness (butter he calls it). Having said that, when I tried flying on Sbeneth outskirt; there was rubber banding too - that seemed to be inevitable. It seems clear from your post that my CPU is to blame. But it's an i5 so I don't know how much more I can ask.

And yes, as Psyrus noticed, my core has already been pushed up from 3.56 to 3.8 Ghz. I am don't think a cooler is necessary and Lito, I am not so sure when you said

Indeed, I was expecting my graphic card to be under-utilised...it's as though PR does not optimise my graphic - could that happen? You also seem to understand my issue that setting my graphic to Highest didn't affect my frame that much! I am not pro at hardware - but I can tell from the graph that a lot of my memory hasn't been used.

I can run Fraps; but how would I be able to pick up the average, high and min? What program should I use for that? What is the route you used? If you can do a rough tracing, I can try giving you the high/low/avg Frame rate.

I guess it does not hurt to give it a try. Will report to you as soon I have time.
To Daniel, most of programs are turned off except Skype, the Logitech gaming software, my colour calibration software running in the background. I don't think RAM is an issue given I have 12GB. Also, I have tried running at Prority set to "High" in Task Manager - doesn't seem to improve frames that much.
