PR Dictionary and PR Terms
Good Afternoon,
While this may be an effort in futility, I would love to see this dream of mine come to light and reality. My dream is to have a dictionary of terms with community approved definitions. While playing on a server earlier today, I was told that mortars were heavy assets and that a TOW or AA was not. In my opinion, that flies in the face of logic illustrating idiocracy/hypocrisy in the highest degree. Funny sidenote to this is that they state that the mortars are heavy assets but they don't allow them to be claimable. Go figure.
Now on to the terms as I have known them over the past 4-5 years of playing PR and 10-12 years of playing Battlefield.
Terms:
Heavy assets - 1) Basically any vehicle that is considered armor or causes major damage. 2) Any vehicle that requires a special kit to operate. 3) Any vehicle that provides long distance warfare that may or may not be limited to long range visibility and/or thermal imaging. 4) Any vehicle that has the capability of long range bombing or short range JDAM. 5) Usually claimable by squad name.
Medium assets - 1) Any vehicle or FOB asset that can be used to assist with long range support of infantry. 2) Any vehicle that can provide short range large C4 explosive capability. 4) Usually not claimable by squad name.
Troll - I believe the best example of this is the origin of the word from the 15th century provided to us by the Old French word troller - a hunting term, "wander, to go in quest of game without purpose" Reference: Online Etymology Dictionary
Noob - 1) a new person to the game that knows nothing or very little about game mechanics 2) someone who disobeys your order or goes contrary to your tactical ideology 3) someone who switches team to ghost or retaliate due to frustration or other factors
DOD - dome of death - This is a protective dome that provides shelter for a team from assaults. While firing into and out of DOD is usually frowned upon, it is not consistently enforced across servers. It has been said that area attacks cannot penetrate the DOD but mortars can.
Wraparound building - This building is a building that has stairwells on each end as well as balconies that wrap partially or completely around the building.
House of pain - This is a building that has one outside staircase that leads up into a small room that has another staircase that leads to the roof. Usually on the roof are two solar panels.
T-Building - This is a multi-level building that is in the shape of the letter T.
Construction - these are areas that are usually accented by rebar and scaffolds that surround an incomplete structure. They sometimes have cranes near them.
Fortress - this is a multi-level building that looks like an old castle complete with round guard towers.
Apartment buildings - these are multi-level building that have stairwells on each end as well as doors. They also have many balconies.
L-Shaped building - this is a multi-level building that usually contains at least 4 levels. Their stairwells are at the corner of the L and have many balconies.
Hotels - These are skyscrapers that usually have a ladder on the elevator shaft side of the building.
Corner building - this is a 2 level building that has 2 garage doors as well as three entry doors. The second level contains a room and a large patio.
Asshat - A person, of either gender, whose behavior displays such ignorance/obnoxiousness that you would like to make them wear their own *** as a hat. - Urban Dictionary
Server admin - people who are entrusted to maintain order on a server. ----- My opinion - Most of the time they maintain order when it affects them or their mates. The ones that are fair minded and understanding don't stay in power long enough to make any difference. Most demand respect but give none. Note the use of the word most, not all are like this.
Squad naming is usually consistent across servers unless a server admin says otherwise because of whatever.
CAS - this is usually any aircraft that contains any type of air striking capability
Tanks - just that, tanks.
APC - This is hotly contested and it depends on the server or server admin as to what these include. Normally these include any vehicle that has a gun that is mainly used for infantry support and transports players. This may or may not include the BTR, LAV, Bradley, IFV, AAV, Beast, BRDM, or any other tin can with a gun.
INF - this is usually just an infantry squad
TRANS - this squad uses transport helicopters to deliver troops and supplies to the front lines.
Mortars - this squad usually is the one squad that controls the mortars for the map.
General server rules are pretty simple and could be broken down into the following:
1. Do not create squads before 2 minutes or 1:30. 1:30 is always a safe bet.
2. Asset squads must be named according to the asset. Some servers and server admins are extremely picky about this and may require you to name it specifically for the specific asset that you are using.
3. No racism or other discriminatory actions or chat. No asshats.
My opinion - While some servers (very very very few) keep it simple and have a very very short list of rules, others go through all the levels of government to create laws that cover every color, creed, religion, and or anything else. It's like having to have a lawyer to defend yourself because you don't know what section or subsection of the rules apply to the situation or accusation. Most servers adhere to the above list while others profess them but do not enforce them so don't be surprised by the occasional lashing from a server admin that thinks you are picking on their mates because they are obviously breaking a rule. In my opinion, if the rules cannot all fit in the short space provided on the introduction screen or display resulting from the in-game command of !rules, the list is toooooooooooo long!!

Re: PR Dictionary and PR Terms
Awesome idea... and totally wrecked by one single post.
I agree that PR could gain with a updated thread with all PR terms, but c'mon what is this?? At least make some screenshots and place it next to the Term...
"Noob" is not a PR term, is an internet one and the definition is not
PS:
Hull Down
Its's when the referred vehicle is only showing the upper side, meaning the gun. Drivers should always position there tanks in this position, minimizing silhouette and maximizing the gunner's shoot arch.
Break Comms, or just Comms
When you hear this you need to restrain yourself to use mumble, local or squad, and this term should be used when you need to concentrate in other comms or you just need to hear PR sounds
Bad nade
It's usually said after saying nade or grenade and it means the previous mentioned grenade did not went as expected and its going towards friendlies
RTB
Returning To Base
Wave off
Abort air landing/operation. When the area is just to hot, for example presence of Anti Air, you can inform the pilot just by saying this term

Dont question the wikipedia! Just because it reports different things on different languages does not make it unreliable source!

Good Afternoon,
With the assumption that you think I wrecked it by putting in my opinion here and there, I added that to express some of my opinions and/or thinking. Regardless of what we may think, this isn't an exact science as in words are derived from a proper language but rather from the heat of competition and other factors.
Lastly, if you want to correct the definition of noob, please provide a reference. I didn't dig very much on this one nor did I get technical with it but rather it was based on game experience. Here is a reference to Urban Dictionary: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Noob

Re: PR Dictionary and PR Terms
I think Turista just meant for you to structurize your post a little..
Server admin -
People who are entrusted to maintain order and gameplay on a server. Type !admins to see a list of currently active admins
Squad naming.. is usually consistent across servers unless a server admin says otherwise because of whatever.
CAS - Close Air Support, this is usually any aircraft that contains any type of air striking capability. Attack Helicopters, Jets, et cetera..
Tanks - Just that, tanks. Also called 'Armor' or 'Heavy Armor'.
INF - This is usually just an infantry squad. Also often called "Mumble Inf" to stress the usage of the ingame VOIP program.
MECH-INF - Infantry squad rolling with a Squad-internal APC/IFV. Rules regarding claiming the asset are different throughout servers.
TRANS - This squad uses transport helicopters to deliver troops and supplies to the front lines. Rules regarding claiming the asset are different throughout servers.
Mortars - this squad usually is the one squad that controls the mortars for the map.
General server rules are pretty simple and could be broken down into the following:

I think Spook did a compilation of all the building and their names in F|H tournament forums, it's deleted now unfortunately.

Grenade/Nade: Incoming (enemy) grenadeO_turista_portugues wrote:

Frag/Frag Out: Outgoing (friendly) grenade
Bad Frag: As above - poorly employed frag/vacate area immediately
All "grenade" calls are "bad" (and are thus a handy way to relieve oneself of culpability for a bad frag
"Noob" (or "n00b"), is a derogatory term for a player perceived to be below your skill level. This is different from "newb" or "newbie", which simply means "new/inexperienced player".

Yeah and pleas don't use "Nade! Nade!" when I'm around, I feel like I am being adressed and end up killed.

Good Afternoon,
I typed it all up in WordPad before posting and the formatting didn't transfer. Typing something that long on the webpage has caused my session to time out so I have avoided it.
I hope this doesn't turn into a "proper" military term dictionary but rather just a PR term dictionary. PR and the military are two different things yet I have met many on PR that insist on using military terms and call everyone that doesn't noobs or other illustrative terms.

Re: PR Dictionary and PR Terms
PR is a military game that aims for realism, it's only normal that some military terms are widely used in PR when in combat situations. The reason for this is not because they sound cool or whatever, it's just because they were designed to keep information clean, clear and concise. Thefore, making them useful when communicating.
So military terms are unavoidable here, but only ones that are widely used in PR should be here, RTB and Wave Off are a good example.
One thing that is good to know is the NATO phonetic alphabet, there is a full blown article about that on Wikipedia. Some people in PR insist on calling map grids by simply saying for example "B 4" instead of "Bravo 4", which many times leads to the unnecessary question "B or D?".
Also: Keypad: Keypads are the smaller, more accurate coordenates inside a grid, their numbers can be seen in the top left of the map, in the A-1 grid, or you can just look down at your keyboard and see the sequence of the numbers in your numpad because it's exactly the same.

Sad thing is is that all your effort will probably go unnoticed, every player that needs these tips in the beginning probably won't read this and everyone who is reading this thread all ready knows all of these terms.

It would be interesting also to add formation therms. Not too much, otherwise the reader might get bored of it and totally ignore them.
Right now the only therm I know (and I use) is just "Spread out". But sometimes I really need specific formations and Im bored of explaining it everytime.
For example when we get to an obj Id like my squad to form a line perpendicular to a line joining us and the obj position (note obj can be a random marker, not necessarly a flag).
Another example inside the cities, I'd a like a short therm that says : "everyone on a crocodile line, cross a street after your teammate in front of you has crossed it, and cover him while he's doing, and stay spred out".
It'd be nice also that everyone knows which class should be on the front, inside, and on the back of the formation.

Sure, it's for ArmA 2, but half of that still applies in any tactical shooter. 4 pages of tactics and stuff. Good luck.

AR=automatic riflemen... Tons of people didn't know.
I seldom hear people use ''CAS Chopper''. But they mostly ended up with havoc or just CAS.
Also, the hospital, it usually has a big yard and a red cross flag if i am not mistaken.
Dead-dead. LOL

Re: PR Dictionary and PR Terms
Just a few vehicle names usually used to call them out that new players might not know (mostly air vehicles, since ground vehicles are usually called out by their class):
Havoc - Mil Mi-28, Russian Attack Helicopter (CAS), sometimes also called Hind (for some reason).
Cobra - AH-1Z Viper, USMC Attack Helicoter, never called by its actual name "Viper", but rather the name of its predecessor, the AH-1 Cobra.
Huey - UH-1N Twin Rotor/Iroquois, mainly known as the USMC transport helicopter (also used by the Canadian and German faction as a light trans chopper), the nickname comes from the english pronuntiation of the first leters "UH".
Osprey - V-22 Osprey, USMC vertical take off and landing transport plane (the only transport plane in the game), also known by players as "a ***** to fly" or the "it's gonna crash, take cover". It's easily identifiable by its huge size and unconventional shape.
Chinook - CH 47, the British heavy transport helicopter (also used by the French, and the Canadians???), possibly the largest helicopter in the game.
Lynx - Westland Lynx, British light transport chopper.
COW - Mil Mi-8, russian heavy transport helicopter, I don't know why they call it Cow, but they do.
Batmobile - Chinese armoured car with remote controlled turret, fearsome little thing.
CROW - Humvee mounted with a remote controlled turret.

Re: PR Dictionary and PR Terms
Glitching
Taking advantage of glitches in game for personal advantage.
Specialist
Old name for a rope kit now a breacher.
LAT
Light anti tank on spawn menu, common SL request spawn with a LAT.
Go defensive
Meaning staying somewhere for a while spread yourselves out sensibly covering all enemy approach angles.
Laze
Means SL will go and look straight at a Tank before getting shot by it whilst attempting to speak to a silent CAS squad.
Huey is called that as the maker is Hughes, Cobra was known as Huey Cobra
