Only 1 in 5 squads speaks English

Post by Evilhardt »

Hello,
I am very surprised by the fact that I can barely find any squads that speak English. You would assume that people who play this game are likely to be more on the educated side of the gamer demographic.

For the Americans amongst you this is probably not an issue. But it is for Europeans. I just joined a server where every single squad was speaking Chinese (and it was the only populated server too)!
I often happen to join servers where all but one squad in the team in speaking Russian! And yesterday I was on a server where everyone spoke exclusively Spanish! ... Except one single guy, who was all alone by himself in a squad titled "English pls".
Then there are people who deliberately create squads that are reserved for a specific language, even though all of the guys in there know English just fine! Taking away one more squad for people to join, who don't speak that particular language. I know from first hand experience, and I would not have played in that squad, if it had not been filled with speakers of that language anyway, so there was no slot left (for anyone who might not have spoken that language) in the first place.

So, some squads are locked, some speak a language you don't know, some don't talk at all... if you are lucky you get a slot in an English speaking squad and if you are very lucky it does not suck.

So, I am basically stuck to play on US servers... which is very late at night for me, because I don't speak Chinese or Spanish or Russian (not well enough anyway)...

This makes me sad. Like, what the hell is this mindset? Can we not just all speak English please?

What is the point for this thread? It's threefold:

1) I would be interested in your reasoning why this situation is a reality
2) An appeal to speak English in PR
3) A rant

I'm not sure how long you've been playing for, but after a while you'll get to know the popular servers and what your respective chances are for teamwork, balance and finding English speaking squads. In Europe your best bets are probably MERK, NEW and PRTA. You'll be sure to find English speakers there.

As for other servers, I think if there are enough people for a squad, people should be able to play and speak their native tongue. The worst come to the worst you could always create an English speaking squad.

Cheers, Murkey.

I feel you bro. I remember one time I joined the NEW server while they were seeding, and I just ended up playing by myself because everyone was speaking german. But it rarely happens to me on other servers (only when server is really full). What server were you playing on?

Also, I'm pretty sure Germany is in the country selection.

I don't know which servers those were. I will pay attention next time.

The Chinese one was -SAGA- 1#, though

And... I don't see Germany in the list:

It's not an issue though. Was just wondering why it wasn't there.

yea, but so what? Just because the server is located in country X does not mean everyone on there not speaking the language of country X should be left out.

How about because English is not the native language for a large majority of people? Sometimes people want to play with their friends and speak their native language.

I for example play a lot with my friends in a Finnish speaking squad, even though I (we all) can speak English just fine, and why shouldn't I? Native language is always.. well, native language.

Of course I play a lot in English speaking squads as well, mostly when playing with clanmates.

Dude, you shouldn't expect to see many people speaking english in a Chinese server. It's not just hosted in China, it is a chinese server. If you go to their website, it's all in chinese. In Europe, you have to look for international servers, MeRK, PRTA and NEW are the best, they're all hosted in Germany. They use english as default.

Also, not everyone speaks english. It's not even a matter of intelectual. Not everyone has english in school, especially in Eastern countries like China. As for Spanish, they just aren't very good with foreign languages.

Stay out of chinese, russian and brasilian servers. Majority there does not speak english. All european servers + american servers are 95% english speaking. And look out for the squadnames. If it says: GER INF, don't expect the guys in there to chat in english. They named it like that for a reason.

Japanese one is even passworded to keep those filthy gaijins outside
Why wouldn't I speak english in my squad (which is filled enough to lock it) (where everyone else also can speak english but their native is russian) even if I do it fine? Because I'll end up in trying to find what word to use when the time runs out and it's always more comfortable with native lang.
Only way you could end in a server where every squad is russian is you joined an russian server. It's stated in it's name and barely 1/3 of it's populations speaks any english except common phrases they've heard in PR. May I ask you to learn russian just because majority here is russian?

I do speak Russian. Just not fast enough for a gaming environment. So...

And imo speaking English is a kind of decent conduct thing, IF you speak it. It is not welcoming to strangers to exclude them via the language. It's not very kind.

Yesterday I was in a German squad. But when a guy joined that didn't speak German we all switched over to English. I expect nothing more from everyone who is capable of speaking English than to do the same for others. This game already has a dwindling or at least very small if stable player base. Fracturing it further deliberately via language is a bad idea.

Well you just answered your own question. People do it because there's someone who speaks english not fast enough. And you want to exclude them via the language exactly the same thing.

It's not black & white only. I do speak it. But not fast enough. Get it? Just like you dont speak russian fast enough. It's fast enough for me to communicate with other squads and CO so my squad is the same part of the team as any eng-speaking sq and I also lock it (ofc if server rules allows) just because we speak russian in it. That's all and nothing you can do without trying to ban those squads to fracture playerbase even further.

I don't get your problem. You cannot expect people to speak english if they simply are not capable of doing it. Which is the case of most players on chinese/russian/brasilian servers.

And except an inf squad is not named specifically after a nationality you will rarely ever hear anything else than english on the EU and US servers. Thats a fact. If you want to play on more servers, learn their languages, otherwise stay in the EU/US zone. I am lucky to speak decent english and russian besides german, that gives me a wider variety of servers to play on. I don't complain about french guys not speaking english if I join a FR squad though..

Indeed, from now on the PR installer will have a crash course on Esperanto where you have to achieve a C grade or higher to be allowed to install the game.

This way no one will be left out.

Just play on EU/US servers, generally there are enough english speakers to play without needing to speak another language.

9/10 there will be a EU server populated.

If a language barrier happens, use ingame emotes or map markers etc to make a point and just try your best.

I don't know how many languages you speak, but personally, from the perspective of some one who speaks more than one language (including a little Esperanto btw.), I find it very annoying if people don't even try.

And I never said people have to speak English. I said people SHOULD speak English IF they know the language, so that this way more people can communicate with each other in total, which, given the small playerbase, sounds like a reasonable idea.

Esperanto is not a very good concept from today's perspective btw. There are way better, more modern approaches.

This is the silliest thing you could possibly have come up with. Like there are totally enough servers or even players to cover any given language. And even if this was the case, it's still a silly argument.

You are missing something here Evil. Foremost the Chinese server(s) are completely isolated from the rest of the PR community. Hardly anyone that regularly frequents those visits these forums, or interacts with the rest of the community. Similar case for the South American and Russian/Ukrainian servers.

They play on those servers entirely because they either do not speak English/whatever language, or because they have xenophobic tendencies and like to keep to themselves. While PR is an international community, not all of it's players are.
