New to forums and thinking of a new rig
Hey everyone, I finally decided it was time for me to get on these forums given that I've been playing the game for at least 2 years now :d uh:. Anyway one of the primary reasons I made the leap to the forums is to get some advice on a new rig. I've already done some research but I'm a bit of a perfectionist and I don't wanna mess this up and waste money. My working list is here Intel Core i5-4690K, Asus Radeon HD 7770, Rosewill BlackHawk - System Build - PCPartPicker. Right now I'm dealing with an old laptop that gets 30 fps on all low settings, with no more than 60 players on the server, outside of dense cities, on a good day \
. It's really inhibited my playing experience and capabilities, it's time for a change!

I don't know much but I have been caught out with RAM compatibility, so check the mobo manufacturer's recommended or QVL RAM.
What else do you play?

Definitely look into getting an SSD for your OS/games. It makes a great difference, especially for arma/dayZ.

Are there any especially good value SSDs out there? My primary concerns, CPU and gpu, are my main money sinks and I'm trying to be as cheap as possible on other parts, so long as they're not reputed to catastrophically fail.
Edit: Just adding my current PC specs so y'all know what I'm used to

Turn off MSAA ( multisample anti aliasing ) for gods sake! It is performance killer. Which model that laptop is?
Save 60$ for cpu by buying it at micro center

HD4570 isn't really a gaming card. You can try a few thing here and there, but you're not going to get much out of it. It is the choke point in this laptop, anything else is just fine.
What you can try to do is clearing shaders cache if you haven't already and let it optimize again. Also turn display resolution down if you play @HD..put it in something like 1366x768px
As for the PC you built there its fine + as others said it would be better if you throw SSD in if you can afford it, games run much better, especially ARMA and PR.

Drop cpu to pentium g3258, buy r9 280x.
New intel cpu is coming out soon, not a good time to buy current gen i5.

But those 2011-3's are mega bucks....the X99 mobos start at around 250$.

Why are you looking at 2011 socketed motherboard?PLODDITHANLEY wrote:But those 2011-3's are mega bucks....the X99 mobos start at around 250$.
Z97 boards starts at $100.
H97, B85...etc. boards go even cheaper.

I was sort of trying to future proof this computer through the gpu and CPU. I'm sure the i3 could work for now although I am doubtful that it would stand newer games. Also I really have never heard of a pentium being used for gaming. Oh and why 1150 vs 2011

Pentium g3258 can get a huge overclock(4.5ghz should be easy for most of them even on stock cooler) and have similar performance as high end i3/i5 for many games.wrecker wrote:I was sort of trying to future proof this computer through the gpu and CPU. Results: Battlefield 4 - Intel Pentium G3258 CPU Review: Haswell, Unlocked, For $75
Best budget cpu for gaming, imo.
i3 is about the same without overclock since it can't.
I'm using Pentium g3258 at 4.7ghz right now; it has its limitations(and slows down in epic battle in planetside 2 just like every cpu out there) but nothing would make me get cheap AMD over it.
You don't need a super powerful cpu to play new games; you need super powerful GPU.

Because 2011 is for very high end cpu that's mostly for content creation than gaming; I'm pretty sure a octa-core i7 would be overkill for just about every game out there except maybe Arma 3 when BIS actually figure out how to utilize it fully.
New Broadwell will fit in LGA1150 socket so it will most likely be a better choice if you just do gaming and not professional content creation.

Just for interest really, and yes the 1150's with a G3258 seems great and if one day you really need 4 core you can get a cheap second hand one as they are incredibly reliable.ComradeHX wrote:Why are you looking at 2011 socketed motherboard?

Re: New to forums and thinking of a new rig
Not seen pentium used for gaming....wow I must be dinosaur by now.
I see i5 as Pentium III of the new era. It will last long time until something similar but more powerful comes out. I7 is too much expensive and is not really meant for gaming, rather professional CPU intensive work.
So if you want bulletproof machine go as you intended, but listen to others too and make a judgement. I know Id go with i5. Two cores on high frequencies is just not enough anymore, and all those tests are synthetic anyway.
Just for the record, how are voltages and temps doing on 4.7Ghz Pentium?

Those are GAME benchmarks...
If money isn't a problem then of course i5 is better.
But in certain cases it's better to go with cheaper cpu and better gpu.

So what gpu would you recommend
Edit: Oh and I should mention that it's likely I'll be using this desktop in college for things like 3D design and engineering programs so I may need the higher computational capacity (I dont know)
