I say this from both the perspective of a Squad Leader and Squad Member.

It's hard to lead a squad when all the 8 man squads are filled with the same few people who stick together. Not talking about clans though. I've seen brennan's squad on CIA filled with the exact same people round in and round out. I.E. Good players are spoken for and stick together with their friends. I'm the only SL I know who actively takes in pubbies and mic-less players. And some of them have surprised me. But that's not the point.

PR has lost it's luster. It's no longer the game I enjoyed for 8 years. People have changed, People have moved on. My fondest gaming memories are from PR, especially .5 Basrah and .98 Fallujah. I don't want to move on. Modern games suck.
i literally only made this account just to tell you how poignant your posts in this topic have been and how true everything you're saying is. there are people in this topic who verbally attack you for your righteous analysis of the reality of the situation. it is because they are the ones who have completely emptied out this game in record time. they will laugh and deny there is any issue until it becomes an issue for them (i.e. nobody plays on their servers anymore [see: CIA]).

to all of the people that belong to the stains on human dignity known as HOG, FCV, CIA, PRWARS etc. how does this photograph make you feel knowing you are the incontrovertible culprit behind this destruction? you argue amongst each other constantly (FCV banning all CIA-tagged members during meaningless child-like feud) yet you are all exactly alike. you are elitist, you are rude, you treat everyone who isnt in your clan like shit, you have the worst attitudes i have ever seen out of full grown adults yet, to me, the most reprehensible thing that you ALL DO is completely annihilate any desire of a new player to continue playing project reality.

if a new player joins any reasonably populated english server (which as of the last six months consists solely of free candy van) this is the typical scenario that will inevitably unfold:

the player will have grasped a basic understanding of the game by reading the manual included with the software, but as with any person new to anything (especially something as incomprehensible, masochistic and Kafkaesque as Project Reality) they will ask basic questions to accrue a greater understanding of the nature of the game.

most new players are earnest to contribute to the team and experience the game as it was meant to be experienced. it would utterly defy human logic to download a 10 gigabyte mod for a 10 year old game just to fuck around for a few minutes then uninstall it. some people ruin the entire game, but these are mostly the admins on the clan servers and the clan members themselves and not new players.

i have witnessed soul-shattering cynicism while on these servers. people will join just having downloaded all of project reality and they finally start it and get in a server and wow- they are really excited to be a part of what's going on. they'll be talkative, decent to interact with and will ask questions in order to avoid slowing down the team in any way. they will listen to the squadleader and do shit jobs most people are too jaded to perform (logi runs back and forth) all the while with a skip in their step and a bright eyed optimism only those unfamiliar with modern PR servers can have.

i have seen people permanently banned for asking what the PTT key was (CIA), for asking how to drop an ammo crate (PRWARS), for dying in an "important" vehicle even if they werent the one actually operating it (FCV), for saying the phrase "what the hell" after being kicked for the aforementioned (HOG). the list goes on.

not once in my entire project reality career have i seen an admin on a server actually assist a new player as opposed to permanently banning them to make sure they dont come back. even for the most innocuous and simple-to-answer inquiries they have had their entire experience of enjoyment rendered extinct. if you dont think these people say "fuck this, this game sucks" and uninstall it immediately after such a vicious eradication, or perhaps several in a row, you are utterly mistaken.

you are absolutely killing the game as nobody new wants to play past their first round and the people who have been playing for years are slowing leaving due to the fact that they are forced to play on these abysmal servers.

most likely some shit talking will follow this post along with maybe a deletion or ban from these forums, but i really dont care. what obpmgmua, matty1053 and orford say is the absolute truth, but unfortunately nobody will listen or care, especially not the devs who actively enable the preceding child-like behavior (they believe it is vital to the survival of this game) that i have detailed here and elsewhere. you will probably go in your separate teamspeaks and laugh and criticize the people who actually know what the fuck is happening to this game, but your laughter will turn to tears shortly when even the last of the last players will evaporate from this autistic wasteland and your empty servers will merely serve as another reminder to you of your foolish actions until they too disappear one day. maybe if it wasnt such a boy's club circle jerk and you actually embraced people who want to play this now-abortion of a mod it would be different, but sadly at this point if there was a change in behavior very few people would be left to notice it. good job.

Then stop searching for excuses and step up yourself. Lead new people in a squad and show them how this game is meant to be played. OR if you are not confident enough to SL yourself, just "foster" the new onee, explain things on him while the squad moves over local. Its honestly not that hard.

Everytime a Player is brave enough to tell you upfront "Im new btw, so please explain things to me" do it, not only when asked, but on your own. People will appreciate it.

edit: And I really must add: For me, its not the gameplay changes w/e, its the people which I am playing with. If you must, hop squads, learn the regulars of the servers you are playing on and find new people you like to play with and vice-versa. They will see you lead/in a squad and invite you into theirs.

The absolute truth itself, great post.PR right now is filled with admins willing to abuse their powers and their friends. If you don't have a stupid prefix of any community/clan you are noone, therefore you should get banned.
@Ranzpirat
It's not about having shit squadleaders, its about having bad players in general.Last night I wasted 2 hours playing on FCV - no teamwork, stupid people in assets. Then I joined DIVSUL Brasilian Server and guess what, although they weren't speaking the best english we could still understand each other and the coordination and teamwork was perfect. They were still playing in this 0973 style, where everybody knew how to play and people weren't wanking their dicks off in all chat saying how good they are while sitting in A1 with their 4 tanks on Kashan.

.
I agree 100%, its one of the smartest and most poignant post i ever read on realitymod.
I wish people ( devs, admins, ... ) could open their eyes and see, stop their banning streak. They are sawing the only branch where their Pride, elitisme, internnet fame, ... is sitting on. Soon this community will be like the mens of Easter Island, who sacrificed all their trees to a borgus and fake beliefs, left only with their eyes to cry.

As some one who just joined on the PR wagon, my first real match was pretty bad. Squad kicking and getting team killed because I didn't know a lot of stuff. But I really want to get into it. Successive games were a bit better though I got
killed a lot.
This might be the hardest game to get into but I want to learn it and be good at it. I want to learn this game.

This post is absolute gold, this is honestly what the PR community has become, I have stopped playing it regularly because of the bullshit that happens inside these servers, as a good playerbase attracts shitty admins. Heck, at the end of .98\start of 1.0, the community was at least 2x better.

My man, I have no doubt that you are preaching the truth right here.

My schedule only allows me to play on FCV and I haven't noticed any severe degradation of gameplay yet. I SL infantry solely and I have found that nearly every squad I've needed to talk to responds and assists. I haven't had any good CO's yet though.

Pubbies make this game and if you don't want to help them or play with them, I don't want you to play and ruin my experience.
