Two questions about mortars and one about UAV

Post by AndrzejSob »

Hi, this is my 1st thread so sorry in advance for my english.

I have 2 questions about mortars.
1. How the trajectory of the mortars looks in the game and is the projectile traveling all the way? I was asking during the game and don't get clear answer. For example: I am shoting with the mortars at 1200 m. And theoretically after 600 meters the mortars projectile is it at highest position. If some kind of airship or soldier on parachute :D . Was there at perfect time is it possible to kill/hit him ot the airship? Or is it just appears in the bigging ( some time i hit tree or building) and then reapperas over the target ?

2. Is the height important when using air burst? I was wondering about it, I assume that the airburst projectile explode over the ground. And if i am on flat space for example the desert on Kashan when i am shoting it will explode properly. But if a im on map Bijar Canyons (http://i.ytimg.com/vi/QYaaL4q8oF4/maxresdefault.jpg) and i put my mortars in H12k5 on top of the mountains and start shoting in to the city(K12k4) that is i think 150 meteres bellow the mortars possition the air burst should spread in mid air and do 0 demage to the city. Is my thinking correct ? If we swith place and the mortars will be in the city and the target will be the mountains, with my theory the air burst will not explode and hit closer.

and last question about UAV
Some times when i go for commander i Cannont mark with "?" mark with the UAV, i see the enemy FOB or tank or something else and select with mouse to pinpoint it on the MAP with blinking question mark to after it select the proper icon of the target. But some times its not working and the question mark is not possible to set. Why ? Maybe i am making something wrong :D .

I'm by no means an expert, but since no one else has chimed in I'll try to answer your questions:

1) As far as I know the mortar follows the arc, it can explode if it hits a tree or building soon after leaving the tube and similarly just before impact. I think the projectile is modelled for the whole of it's flight and could hit a chopper/parachutist/ blimp at any point in its trajectory. I think the flight time is constant no matter the distance you're firing the mortars. I want to say 20 seconds but could be wrong.

2) The height is important when using air bust. I'm not sure at what height (on flat terrain) it detonates, about 25m is a safe bet. As you assumed if the elevation isn't accounted for the round will detonate too high and spread its effects too wide and high, meaning little or no damage. Conversely they can hit the ground before detonating, significant;y reducing their effect. As with everything else I've said this is just from personal experience. The best thing to do for a solid answer is look in the game files or wait for someone more knowledgeable to come along. :P

As for the commander, no idea, I'm all about the boots on the ground.

Cheers, Murkey.

*Sorry if there are typos or I've been unclear, I'm at work and should be working.

2. wrong....height is not important. only artillery has adjustable Height of burst (HoB) rounds. mortars use proximity so therefore it explodes x amount of feet above the surface all the time no mater what.

the height in the mortar calculator is for...if you have mortars built on a hill and you are shooting at something well below your firing emplacement's altitude then you need to adjust for height...but since there are no topographical lines to help you determine elevation then its not really a big deal....if you have a good observer. especially since you only get distance in increments of 50meters. so my best advice to someone using the mortar is to leave height alone.

i would suggest using the search function....this has been discussed thoroughly and there is even a mortar guide in the tactics and strategies section

i THINK the mortars are actual projectiles. Its been a while since I've seen this but people who placed mortars next to trees or tall buildings would sometimes end up hitting the trees/buildings. or, ive team killed attack choppers before but that might just be from airburst/bad timing.

for UAV, from my own experience the ? appears when nothing is actually being "spotted". you have to spot the area around it to get the ?s to show up.

The game uses actual projectiles for the weapons. So if the projectile hits something, it would explode.

I can verify this. A helicopter flew over me while I fired a mortar and it exploded.
