Use of the Combat Engineer

Post by Nightingale »

What do you guys think is an acceptable use of the combat engineer class?

I've seen people grab it out of a crate to destroy an enemy FOB, just because they didn't want to wait for the breacher to reload his C4 sticks from the crate. And then they just leave it on the ground to de-spawn. And this happens so often I'm not sure what the community's views on the combat engineer kits are.

IMHO, the kit should only be used to place mines, deactivate mines, and to destroy INS caches through thin walls. I don't think there's any good reason to use it as just another breacher kit.

(Let's ignore the Taliban combat engi, as it is very different from the other factions' engi class).

Used to be it could get fortifications built quickly and help speed the repair of vehicles to a certain level of health.

Now it's just the teamkill kit because of mines.
Players might be hardcoded, but that sure doesn't seem to stop anybody from trying.

The only winning move is not to play. Insurgency, that is.

I see it used or use it myself often to destroy bridges with the big C4 pack and deny enemy passage over important roads with mines. So it's very usefull in any defensive situation :)

I mainly use it for destroying heavy vehicles.

One big C4 and one small can be put on with one run and is enough to kill every vehicle ingame.

It's a special kit for a special purpose.

Nothing wrong with it.

If it's underused then it's working as intended.

One of my favourite kits playing as bluefor on ins, can take down caches, disarm ied's and useful for keeping your land rover alive cos that thing likes to kill itself just by driving over bumps.

You can also use it to repair the doors inside the tunnel on kozelsk.

Use it with the Crows/TOWS Humvee so you can stay on the field for longer with repairs.

Acceptable use is to make use of what's coming with the kit. Mines are deadly as ever and C4-ing stuff is especially fun when it runs on tracks. The Repair Kit has somewhat limited uses but ok, can't have it all. I'm a bit flabbergasted though how you describe it's being used, I've never seen that happen.
VTRaptor: but i only stopped for less than 10 secs and that fucking awesome dude put 2 of them

]CIA[ SwampFox: well my definition of glitching is using an enemy kit to kill the enemy

Just_Dave: i have a list about PR players, and they r categorized by their skill

My general feeling for the engineer is...

1. Area denial (pretty unique to enginner).
2. Asset denial (can for the most part be done my specialist).
3. Repair ( can be done by logi and vehicle depot.

In order of importance.

Maybe I'm just especially unlucky then. I love being the combat engineer, but I usually go for clandestine missions to place 20 mines in a small area to ruin the enemy logistics and kill some tanks and APCs. But sometimes I see people grab the combat engineer even though they already have a breacher to do those things. It makes my blood boil to see that, especially when I know that they will never use it to defuse mines, repair vehicles, or lay mines. They just can't be bothered to destroy enemy emplacements one at a time with the Breacher's C4, so they get a combat engineer kit so they can do it twice as fast. :cussing:

I guess they just assume it's one of those "useless" kits that nobody else wants, and that it's OK to waste them. I mean, it definitely isn't one of the more popular kits.

And it doesn't have to be a popular or common kit!

Specialist kits are for specialist roles, and when you need to make an area hazardous/impassable to vehicles (with the support of supply crates and friendly riflemen), accept no substitute.

I love the kit. No one else seems to take it but I use it a lotta times because I find it fairly multirole.

I never let my squad take combat engy unless we are specifically needed to destroy bridges/mine areas.

Squad members who request this kit without my approval often get kicked from the squad.

It's a limited kit that might be desperately needed elsewhere, by taking it we could be depriving the team.

If I squad lead, and we are going to be going to an objective after enemies first flag... I usually tell my squad member to get a CE kit. So, he can mine roads and such.

But I have seen people take it like it's a normal kit, and then waste it.

If you ever see me on the US team on Khamisiyah you better watch out when driving through Al Khidir, because I can assure you I'll have the place mined like white on rice.

lol, I love doing this too. Let me share with you a story about a good match my squad had one time while doing this exact thing:

One time, the squad I was in used AT mines on the bridge instead of C4 and waited for a vehicle to drive over it. Sure enough, a Troop Carrier with 7 people in it rolled over and died, and the explosion also caused the very first section of the bridge to collapse. So then we put AT mines underneath the collapsed part, so that if anybody was dumb enough to fall in, they would also die on it. Somehow, TWO APCs were careless enough to fall into this trap, and our squad ended up with a troop carrier kill, 2 BMPs (I think), and a MTLB. Our team lost that round though, so maybe we weren't as helpful as we thought we were...
