What make and model of router?
1. router is not dual band
2. your WiFi is using channels that have interference in your household/neighborhood.
3. your home network has some feature like file sharing/automated backup/antivirus maintenance or something that runs in background when new device connects.
4. Does it happen when you connect your smartphone to your wifi router?

Pace Model 3801HGB
192.168.1.254
Don't even notice it when a phone is connected, just the laptop really kills it.

How many rooms/obstacles does the signal have to go through? Do you have a 2.4ghz phone near either the laptop or the HG? There is a setting at the bottom of the wireless page for power, make sure you have it at 400mW.
Also, consider giving your PCs and laptops static IPs on your home network, could be some issue where there isn't enough IP addresses, or two devices are fighting for same IP, or something like that.
Also take a look that your notebook isn't running malware that is phoning home large amounts of data when it connects to the nwetwork.

Has to really only go through a wall or two, doesn't seem like to much. Not sure about the phone, will ask her when she is awake. Wireless is at 400mw. Tried to log on to make it a statics IP, put in the password and got an internal server error 500 or something, so I'm going to need to call my ISP.
