Strange Patch Installation Error

Just bought a new PC, reinstalled Battlefield 2 from Steam with the intention of playing PR.
Attempted to install Patch 1.41. Fails to install and gives me the error "Can't find install folder". First thing I do is Google the problem, happy to see other people have it too.

I proceeded to check the registry (as recommended by every single fricken source online) to put in the correct installation directory. It is already there. What the hell.

You'll need to change the "1.5" to whatever version you have installed currently before attempting to install the 1.41 full patch.

Actually, I figured out what the problem was. It was nothing to do with the registry at all.
In my rush to actually start playing PR I had never even opened Battlefield 2. Turns out that was a mistake.
