Problems with new video card

Post by nine_lives »

I had been running PR flawlessly with a GTX 590 GP for years. It crapped out and I replaced it with a GTX 780 and I've been having problems running PR ever since.
Here are some of the issues:
  • The terrain will start flashing and then my computer will crash and reboot
  • When changing view to the map or looking through a scope, the screen will sometimes go blank for 3 or more seconds
It's weird, I'm getting decent FPS and on some maps it will run flawlessly and others have all sorts of trouble. I've tried clearing the caches and everything else using the support utilities.

Any suggestions?

possible cause:
1. still using the shaders cache from the gtx 590 on the gtx780.

2. Nvidia driver installer package left "Crumbs" of old gtx 590 installation in place when it was suppowsed to fully uninstall and instal lthe new gtx 780 drivers.

possible solution:
1. Delete the ProjectReality shader cache.
automated: PRLauncher->Support->Utilities->Clear Shader Cache - Press the Perform Task button.
manually: go to C:\Users\Sean\Documents\ProjectReality\mods\bf2\cache and delete all the directories with long names.

Boot up PR and test.

2. download newest NVidia drivers.
download and install treexy driverfusion:
Driver Fusion | Update, manage and monitor drivers & devices | Treexy
Run it. Completely uninstall all Nvidia graphics drivers.
REBOOT.
restart windows, do not let new hardware wizard install drivers automatically.
manually install the newest Nvidia drivers.

Boot up PR and test.

------------------------------

Were you running any third party programs like sweetFX or nividia inspector on the GTX590? If you had any custom settings it could be the source of this problem also.

Thanks for the suggestions. i did try using treexy driverfusion but it was returning error message when i tried to delete the previous drivers. I ended up doing a clean installation of Windows and PR - so far it seems to be working great

So it's been a few weeks and even after a new install of windows 7, fresh video drivers, and some experimentation of grapics settings I'm still having the same problems:
  1. The terrain will start flashing - seems to be limited to desert maps/terrain
  2. Sometimes when changing scenery, the screen will go blank for a few seconds to a minute or more
  3. today, in the middle fo a game, I got a window that said something like "clearing bf2 resources" and then CTD

    Any suggestions?

I'm not sure if it's the same problem I had but try going into control panel, then NVIDIA Control Panel and add prlauncher.exe and prbf2.exe into the list. Then under the 2nd option make sure that High-performance nvidia processor is selected instead of integrated graphics.

I have integrated intel graphics card but also proper dedicated nvidia one and what happens a lot of the times is that a game chooses to use integrated graphics instead of my powerful nvidia processor. Ever since I changed that setting my game runs super smooth and perfect :D

I hope this helps :)

Thanks for the suggestion but my MB doesn't have integrated graphics

Hi nine_lives,

I'll run through some common causes for this, keep in mind several of my PR buddies are running 780s and 770s without a problem.

(my strongest suspicion to the cause, and only way I can replicate this with my GTX670) Are you running in windowed mode or borderless windowed mode? Try running in full screen mode. Test.

Are you running any overlay programs, TS3, Overwolf, Skype, Afterburner, etc? shut those off completely. Test.

Are you running a Dual-Link or other high end connection monitor?

Do you have multiple monitors installed?

Are you running Windows 7 Gadgets or alternative UI like Rainmeter in the background?

Running in full screen mode with just one monitor and with almost nothing fancy running in the background (just AVG antivirus, iCloud, GPU and CPU temp monitors)

"GPU and CPU temp monitors"

Is it FreeMeter? Is it some other one using OpenGL for the graphs?

I'm stumped. not sure how or why this is happening.

In your Nvidia settings, you could try creating a Program specific setting for C:\Program Files (x86)\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\PRBF2.exe , overriding the program settings, lowering the settings then testing.

Nvidia Control Panel->3D Settings->Manage 3D Settings ->Add Program
C:\Program Files (x86)\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\PRBF2.exe
Overide and Lower the settings,
Click APPLY in bottom right.
Test PR.

If it works, you can then go back and raise the settings.

IDK, maybe someone with a 700 series card will come along with better advice.

The GPU monitor is GPU Temp and the CPU is Core Temp

Changing the 3D settings - they are all on "Use global settings", should I turn them all off?

Are all your Global Settings on Default settings?

Nvidia Control Panel->3D Settings->Manage 3D Settings ->Global Settings Tab

**Update**

I'm pretty sure the video card itself was bad - started getting flickering on my Windows screen. Tested it on another system and it was having similar issues. Too bad that I cant return it :(

Thanks for all your help

**Update**

I replaced the card with a GTX 770 and it's (knock on wood) running PR smoothly. Able to average 50-60+ fps with everything set on high.
