It's alive and servers are all over the world(except maybe Africa).

Just make sure you have a mic and join a squad that's communicating. This game has a steep learning curve but its simply amazing once you get into the teamwork aspect.

Just ordered BF2 on eBay so I can play PR again for the first time in years.

When it arrives, do I just pop in the DVD (CD?) and install it as normal, or is there any special jiggery-pokery involved now that I hear one has to use a kindly dev's master server to make a player profile?

nah already bought one for 2,50 euro's on markplaats.nl its even in the sealing it came in installing now i hope it works
