Why hearing enemies on local will not become a thing

Post by Barnard »

For people who've wondered/requested this feature, here's a quick answer by the PR/Squad devs:

While that is one of the reasons there is another one:
When you'll be able to hear the enemies people will stop using mumble and stop communicating when enemies are close. Yes this can be realistic but also not since in RL it's a lot harder due to different languages to understand your enemy. Since in a game you can't do any hand signs or similar gestures the voice com is your only way of communicating except the even more unrealistic ingame chat.
And in this particular example it's gameplay > reality.

This would also give people, mainly clans an advantage if they rely on 3rd party communication channels; we didn't want that as well.

That's all good for gameplay; but why not have a dedicated local channel for yelling at nearby enemies?

Press some random button on mouse for yelling allahuakbar/profanities(in appropriate language)...etc.

Will be abused. Imagine all wounded enemies screaming at you so you can't hear their teammates coming in.

is there no way to make it/code it when a person dies they become deaf/mute on mumble till they respawn? and yeah i do agree if this was implemented..people would use 3rd party voip more often and we as a community dont want that i would think. and also i think all the cons out way the pros and gameplay>realism

I do like the idea of a second button for opfor local. There could still be more problems with it beyond confusing medics though...

People won't use it spairingly, that's why. I doubt anyone wants PR or Squad to turn into a spam fest of "allahuakbar/profanities. It would become like COD's voice chat in the sense in COD that's what you frequently hear(instead of teamwork, ppl talking smack). It wouldn't be too horrible if we could trust everyone to use it spairingly as an occasional "in jest" or "competitive nature" type of thing but people can't be trust for that sort of thing. Even if this "Dedicated local channel" had to be "Switched too" in order to use thus keeping it away from the people who didn't want to hear it...it could cause other problems and consequently stir things away from teamwork. This is the limitation of games...we want realism but i do think there is limitations. I think hand gestures would be the next step up for communication for a realism community.(though that doesn't exactly let you tell off the enemy, unless one of those hand gestures included flipping em the bird haha...but then again who's gonna lower they're weapon long enough to flip em the bird and then shoot em? lol).

There must be recordings from back in the early mumble days where we could talk to the enemy team.
Although it was hilarious, it defeats the purpose of mumble. You would avoid using it, not to give your position away.

If anyone can find a recording from those days, please post :) People will have a laugh, and understand why it disturbs game play.

There has to be. Not maybe in BF2 but fuckin unreal comon.

Also is there anyone who actually wanted this? Dedicated button and deaf/mute on death i can get behind.

The problem with this, is that some groups just end up cheating, and using TS or another 3rd party client. So the best option is to just give everyone a level playing field, and not auto deafen/mute.

You can hear the enemies on local in the Russian RUPRC server, dead enemies can be annoying once in a while, giving false intelligence, acting as friendly wounded.

You can already do it with calling for medic.

Even easier: just disable it when someone is down.

How would you know if it has not been done currently?(what has been done so far is having only one local speech that both sides can hear)

I was playing PR with mumble back when we could hear the enemies and it wasn't bad at all.

If you can't believe in the tiny community we have now; what can you believe?

COD is annoying and dumb because everyone hears the bullshit.
What I suggested was simply a local speech that lets enemies hear it, in ADDITION to the current local-for-friendlies and squad/SL/CMD radio.

Assuming overlay is working; you would know if it's teammate talking or enemies.
(or you can type the message if you think it's so important)

It doesn't make a whole lot of sense from a realistic perspective as most people will be talking in English, so everybody understands everything. Does the average US soldier understand Pashtun? No. It breaks the immersion and teamplay the Dev's are looking for probably more than anything else. Resistance and Liberation had the very same feature and it was just awful for game play, and according to most others it was awful in PR as well when the game still had it.
VTRaptor: but i only stopped for less than 10 secs and that fucking awesome dude put 2 of them

]CIA[ SwampFox: well my definition of glitching is using an enemy kit to kill the enemy

Just_Dave: i have a list about PR players, and they r categorized by their skill

Para: You sir are an arse and not what the game or our community needs.

AlonTavor: Is that a German trying to make me concentrate?

Heavy Death: join PRTA instead - Teamwork is a must there.

Just go over a dead enemy body. Call for medic in local. Wait for ambush... Or do it with an explosive :D

why not leave as a option? you can use either to talk to friendlys as to enemies or you can set to only talk to friendlys but also you cant hear enemies, thats can be good if you tell for the guy to surrender or even taunt really.

Simple solution; make it so that you can hear local speech but distort it, either to unintelligible banter or just fuzz. I'd imagine if you're a soldier and you're near an enemy, then you're probably not going to understand anything that they're saying.

It would add a whole new dynamic to the game where you will have to be stealthy around enemies. Otherwise they hear you spamming local and you'll be dead.
