Some of the guides are pretty old. Best bet is to ask SL in game for tips and advice and keep playing.

Sorry to hear you had a bad first experience. When you join a squad tell everyone that you're new and most likely they'll help you out. Some squad leaders and other players can be jerks but most are quite friendly. You'll have a great time if you find the right group.

When you join a squad, please let your squad leader know that you are new to the game. They will try to help you when they know. If they don't know, they might just treat you like trash.
