It has brought me back to the battlefield.
Played PR for a number of years.

Just yesterday I was thinking of buying a copy of BF2 in order to get PR....lo and behold a quick check on here and glory be, standalone!!!

I was bored with BF4 and all the idiots.

Don't care about the graphics, it's all about the gameplay!

Thank you PR 1.3....and the devs of course.

Now have to remember how to play correctly.

EG: As squad leader (officer) I had forgotten you need squad members nearby to place rally...and of course my squad of newbs were all over the place...

I've wanted to try out this mod a while ago, but it wasn't easy to set up and I couldn't get it to work. I was browsing Twitch streamers and I saw Lirik playing, and he mentioned that the mod was now standalone. I imediately dropped what I was doing to download this, I've been looking for a realistic war simulator in a long time.

1.3 was indeed successful and teaching new people has been interesting so far.

The only problem I have is the lack of administration on some servers on a new update....

And yea don't let people getting mad when you tell them to read the manual stop you from saying it. A lot don't even know there is one.

There's always the first time playing PR, a lot of people will make mistakes.

Heck, when I first played, I was the ultimate noob since 0.7:

There will always be that first time you tip over a helicopter because you weren't patient... Still do it, but not in public servers

There will always be that first time you didn't know how to get that cool weapon and you were frustrated...

There will always be that first time you tried to kill an enemy in the classic run and shoot tactic, and wondered why the enemy didn't die...

There will always be that time when you bunny hop a lot when getting shot at, panicking while trying to dodge bullets like Neo from the Matrix, and realize you are all out of stamina and now your dead-dead.

There will always be that first time you join a server, and realise you need to join a squad and get kicked.

So try to be nice and patient to all the new players :)

I think most new players are truly "shocked" that PR 1.3 is actually free to play. No purchase DLC or pay-to-win weapons, classes, rank or XP.

"a free standalone army simulator? what's the catch?"

thanks devs!

well, telling people to read the manual is not really a clever way to teach new players INGAME. I mean, does anyone really think someone will disconnect from the server and start reading?

Most questions can be answered very fast and learning by doing imo is better anyway. RTFM = STFU to a new player I think.

Manual in PR is important, do you want to spend 2 hours explaining the game or play it?

Rather have a guy with some background than none at all.

Although if there's some guy in your squad asking questions, do answer them.

I've found that I could turn a mostly useless player into a relatively useful player just by answering his questions every time he had them.

Of course, do say "After this, read the manual."

Also, don't micromanage. If people are clueless, they ask. If not, let them figure it out. People aren't braindead. I learned all my kits from observation and testing it out myself anyway, I didn't need anyone telling me to LMB to shoot and R to reload.

Of course new players should read the manual first, but many have not for many reasons..
Everybody want to play right now but I think atleast this week and perhaps next one, veteran players should sacrifice some time to give advice and explanations to new players. It's only fair considering the amount of time the devs have put into the mod. We the community can atleast try our best to increase number of players and be friendly for a week. Simply telling someone to "read the manual" is to me very elitist and arrogant, atleast try to answer their questions and at the same time advise them to read the manual.

Also do remember that it's better to get a player performing decently than to have him leave and someone else to repeat the process of "How do I X? Read the Manual." and leaving.

the best way to teach newbies would have been to release a training video wich they could have watched during downloading the game.

sure its quite some work but there were videos for PR:Arma too, they all gave a good impression of what the main idea of the gameplay mechanics was, if you ask me.

I agree with you, but like someone stated above saying that RTFM = GTFO, IMHO is wrong assumption. Like, first question for new people I ask - "have you red the manual?"

And then we continue by giving tips, how to survive first engagement. :)

That's just it. The majority of the players on now are coming from console games and such and require some sort of XP or ranking system to bolster their little egos. That is one reason I see a percentage of new players leaving. Once they figure out there is no leaderboard or badges for no-scoping they will return to BF4 and the likes.

I think there are still quit a few like me who haven't downloaded yet. I can't get the DL until Wednesday or Thursday so it will be next week end before I can even try it out. You built it..we will come. :D

In the mean time , I've been reading the manual. I haven't played for years..so long in fact that the game hardly resembles ANYTHING like I remember so I'm really looking forward to it.

And PLEASE!!! NO "STATS"!!! EVER!!! All that does is create a sub-community of "elitists" that for some reason or other think they're better then you and spend a whole lot of time belittling players for their mistakes.

Dont worry, that will not happen on PR platform.

When ever I tell someone to read the manual I make sure to answer their question beforehand.

If you don't tell them to read the manual, and they don't even know there is one, how will they find out? Really irritating how people don't see that the majority of the time ingame.

PR hasn't had this many players and installs for years. This release is 20x popular then 1.0. And its only first week...
I don't want to go back to low numbers, I like most of the new players. All I'm sayin is those who have no respect for the rules or other players will be gone soon, just by the fact that they won't enjoy the game.
