New player: How do you join a squad?

Now yeah I know you select a sqaud in the spawn menu, but do you just join it or do you ask the squad leader if you can join? Now if someone could tell me the polite way to join a sqaud I would appricate it.

Just join the squad, and ask if the Squad Leader wants you to get a certain kit

Join a squad, say hello to everyone, tell SL you are new, ask where to spawn (DO NOT SPAWN RIGHT AWAY, if you already spawned, its fine then) and what kit is needed.

Exactly what Cossack just wrote. Also remember that just like there are good squads there are bad squads. If you join a squad that isn't working together etc. you should feel free to join another squad.
