Crash to desktop without error message

Post by Rendex1 »

First of all, hello !

I'am happy to join this community (that I discovered way too late) and apologize letting a support thread be my first post.

But let's jump to the topic.

As you might have guessed, I'am unable to play Project Reality. I installed the standalone version without problems and the launcher downloaded the newest version. I then started the game for the first time. Everything went fine, until the end of the intro.

Just as the "Project Reality" Dog Tag fades away and the new music begins the game crashes to the desktop without any explanation. It just makes the standart "Windows error sound". At first I tried to solve the problem by myself and searched for things like:

"(Bf 2) Project reality crashes to Desktop"
"Project Reality crashes, no error message"
and
"Project Reality crashes after intro"

Obviously it's hard to find resolutions without having any kind of lead, or error message. I of couse rebooted my PC and reinstalled the game twice. Cleaning up manually the second time around.

Now I'am here, writing my first support post ever. It is literally the first time, I'am not successfull fixing the error on my own, so this gives me kind of a headache.

Anway, this is everything I can copy out of the Support Panel in the launcher (my Specs, etc):

Try running in windowed mode. Option can be found in the settings in the PR launcher.

Unfortunately it did not work.

It makes the crashing sound just after the logo fades away. The only thing that is different now, is me seeing the launcher say: "PR:Bf 2 has closed, ... [something not important]"

Thanks for the input though.

No solution but other people seem to be having this problem:

Actually try disabling the intro video see what happens.

I tried that already and just did it again. Nothing.

At least you found a thread with my problem in it, I wasn't able to do so. Thanks for taking your time.

I already had the weird suspicion that it has something to do with Windows honestly. I recently tried to change my Windows UAC settings to normal and when I restarted Windows it said that it failed to load the "Usersomething service" I had to reset my Pc to an earlier date to fix this.

I was trying to replace broken Windows files with "/sfc scannow" and he found dmaged files, but couldn't replace them.

I know this is irrelevant to the game and I have no idea how it could be connected, but it's something that I think is worth mentioning after seeing other people having problems once they updated their Windows.

Simple problem solution:

1? Create a new profile or delete the ''001'' profile
2? Enjoy the game!

Worked for me!

what happens when you run E:\Games\SONSTIGES\Project Reality\Project Reality BF2\PRBF2.exe ?

It should get to a menu screen that says "You must run this game through the launcher"

Make sure to install DirectX 9, .NET framework and Visual C++ https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f27-pr ... guide.html

Make sure PRBF2.exe and PRLauncher.exe are given exceptions in your antivirus and firewall.

Ok something interesting happened.

I deleted everything. The mod, every installation of .NET framework, Visual C++ and DirectX9. I reinstalled these programs afterwards and followed the instructions a third time. I already made exeptions for PR, but I completely disabled both my Firewall and Antivirus for the sake of testing.

The game still crashes before the intro, BUT I managed to load the main menu by only starting the PRBF2.exe . I was told that it couldn't connect and that I have to start it through the launcher, just as expected. I clicked on exit and heard the "error sound" that I normaly get, then the application closed.

In short, all of it did not help directly, but I get into the (obviously useless) main menu by not starting through the launcher.
